I have a painful mouth ulcer under my tongue and am on mtx, sulfasalazine and have a systemic steroid injection approx. every 8 weeks, I know that mouth ulcers are a side effect, but should I contact the GP or just treat it? don't want to appear that I am overreacting to GP, I have ongoing issues with GP`!

mouth ulcer
I get sporadic attacks of these awful mouth ulcers due to MTX. I get difflam mouthwash, or the generic equivalent, from my gp.
I am sure that you should tell your gp, this is a very distressing side effect, which sometimes leads to people giving up on MTX! It isn't trivial, and needs proper treatment!
Good luck! M x
Hiya Shelley. If it's something you've not experienced before on your meds it's better to be on the safe side & let your primary med prof for RD know whoever it may be, GP or Rheumy team. I think if you have a look at your patient info leaflet it suggests to let your doctor know if you experience any of the side effects.
How much folic a acid do you take? As may be better to speak to your rheumy team rather than the GP and see what they say about increasing it. But hopefully it's just a one-off and will go and not return.
thank you everyone, as I had such bad tummy cramps an loss of appetite for 6 weeks I got in touch with rheumy nurse and she upped my folic acid to 5 mg for 5 days, so not sure if it can be increased anymore? and that has sorted the tummy problems out....will contact GP and see what they advise, at the moment its just the one so hopefully, everything crossed, it will be the only one
My Rheumy prescribes 5mg every day except MTX day & find it helps, but it seems it's more to do with the Rheumy's preferred way. My Consultant in Spain only prescribed 1 the day before & 1 the day after. The only thing that seems not to be a good thing is to take it the same day as MTX. I'd ask & see if taking it 6 days would help you even further particularly if you're predisposed to mouth probs.
I think it depends on the dosage of MTX re the folic acid. If you are just on a low to middling dose then taking too much folic acid can undermine the effectiveness of the MTX so my rheumy explained to me once. So it is important to check this with your consultant or rheumy nurse first.
I recently got sores in my nose, similar to mouth sores. Talked to RA Dr and she said to take the Folic acid everyday. I said I've heard it diminishes the mtx if taken same day and she said no it doesnt matter, just take FA every day.
Hi Shelley, I get these and am on azathioprine. I usually use adult bonjela. My rheumy nurse advised corsodyl mouth wash.
