I've had a thumb fusion - it went really well. I must say though that I think you're going to find it extremely difficult if you're having both thumbs fused at the same time because your hands will be in a cast for up to 6 weeks.
The op itself took about 2 hours, I was awake, and had a nerve block down my whole arm. It didn't hurt much afterwards.
I've had both thumbs fused, at different times but both in 2006. So glad I did it, it has really helped-with both appearance and function.
Good luck,
Christine
Thanks Trianon and Tinwoman2, I think I may have confused you I am only having the left thumb done but the trapeziectomy at the same time. The surgeon did say that he usually does two separate operations but is going to do them both together. Thanks for your replies, I have had both wrists fused and they have helped with the pain, so hopefully it will do the same for my thumb.
