Hi Clare :). You are not alone with this, if you have a look around the posts on here you will see that quite a few of us have the same problem including me! Started off with feeling like I had earache, then dull toothpain but is now a bit more localised and can tell it's from jaw which my Consultant has confirmed. Makes it's hard to eat certain foods like bananas, apples and sometimes bite my tongue when talking... Ouch! Also have started to stuff food in my mouth whilst the going is good and I can open it wide enough... not a good look :). Have been offered a localised steroid jab in jaw joint which I may just have to take up to see if it sorts it but after time you do tend to just kind of get used to it. Good luck x
Thanks for reply it's so nice to be able to talk to other people who know what your goin thru not so bad that I can't eat that wld really finish me off lol
Hello clarek67 Yes I have had pain in my jaw, feeling like toothache and painful to move my jaw. I remember holding my face whilst at work not initially connecting it to the rheumatoid. It lasted two or three weeks and it has not returned. It was at a particularly stressful time as my father was very ill. I hope yours is short lived. We tend to cope with these things but please take care of yourself.
Thanks funny thing my mum is ill just now been back and forward to hospital and I'm very stressed think it makes rhuematoid worse
Fortunately I've never had trouble with my jaw but I do think stress exacerbates RD. My mum in law, who I thought of as my second mum as I lost mine early 20's, passed recently after a long illness it's definitely had an impact on me. I know it'll be difficult but try not to get too run down & rest up when you're able.
I do hope your mum shows some improvement soon.
Hi yes I've had that too. It was hard to eat or even speak sometimes as it felt my mouth wouldn't open. It's ok now it passed when that flare settled down. I've never had it in my chin though. Have you got any toothache as well? Wondering what meds you take as a small infection can cause big problems with some of them. Speak to your doctor on Monday.
Hi thanks for replying the pain in my chin is weird!! But my jaw is sore as we'll I'm on sulphasalasine methotrexate and hydroxycloroquine(think that's how it's spelt)
Yes I've been on all of those too. Def speak to your dr as they reduce your immunity just to double check there's no infection anywhere. Sometimes if your glands are a bit swollen it can cause jaw pain I've been told. The chin pain could be something like a deferred pain or a trapped nerve. But best to just get a quick check X
hello, this is common with rheumatoid disease. i have it in my left jaw. sometimes it can go into my ear. my jaw grinds at times too. i don't take anything special for it and just depend on my pain relief to ease it. i also find opening my mout wide for dental work to be done. it all related to the disease. X
I used to have it quite frequently before my RA was under proper control with meds. I had a diet of Heinz chicken soup with soggy bread for a while, and dentist appointment when I couldn't open my mouth wide for a check up. The jaw is a joint, after all, and we're all susceptible to RA having a pop at it. I've personally found that it was only in the early stages (which I'd say for me was the first 18 months) that I experienced this. It should go after a while x
