Back on methotrexate after 9 month break.....

The 9 month break was for me to attempt IVF which was unsuccessful as the RA has unfortunately affected my chance of ever having a child. I'm now back on the methotrexate but are feeling much worse being back on the medication than I was when I wasn't taking anything. As anyone got any suggestions how I can cope with this feeling

Hiya Widget. I feel for you as I've been there pre RD. Are you on tablets or injection? If it's tablets I'd ask if you can change to injection as most people seem to cope better with it. I take it you're taking folic acid. Your symptoms may improve if you up them. Best to have a word with your Rheumy nurse & see what her thoughts are.

Something else to consider is that your body has gone through a hell of a lot both emotionally & medication wise recently & you're probably feeling a bit battered & run down which won't help. Were you offered counselling after you ended your IVF? I mention this as many people who are unsuccessful go through a form of grief & this could have an impact.

I do hope you feel better soon & keep us updated.

Hi nomoreheels

I'm on the tablet form with folic 3 times a week. I've seen on here many use injection form, it sorts of frightens me having to inject myself. I expect everyone goes through that feeling though.

No counselling after the IVF, suppose that was because it was clear before I started any of the 'heavy stuff' that my body would not cope with the treatment so it was ended. My partner has been great supporting me, we got together after the treatment failed, he understands that my emotions are all over the place & I know that stress is not good for us with RA and while I think I'm coping with it maybe my body isn't

Ok, if it was me I'd ask if can swap to the injections. It really isn't frightening once you've been shown how to do it & done it yourself a few times. We've been talking about it on here as Lou30x posted a question yesterday about changing to injections, have a look at it & our answers, it may help. I'd ask about maybe upping your folic acid too. I used to take one the day before & one the day after MTX & now take it every day except day of MTX & it has made a difference to how I feel.

I have to admit although we were offered counselling after the end of our 6 attempts we didn't take it up as we were able to talk honestly (& cry) with one another. I'm inclined to think, as a non medical person, that what you've gone through & still going through could have had an impact on how you're feeling now.

It's really good that your partner is supportive but let's face it he didn't go through it & maybe doesn't truly understand how you're feeling.

Hope this helps & don't hesitate to pm me if you feel the need.
