Hi, i started on champix today an i am hoping i succeed this time (after many attempts) can anyone give me any tips on when you get in stressful situations. How you deal with it when you cant reach for the ciggys!! That is my downfall.

Hi Linda and congrats on the big decision.

I'm a Champix quitter, but I know I wouldn't be here 31 days later without this site. Read, read and post. People want to know how're your getting on, the lows and highs. Join a group - the November guys look really strong and they'd welcome you.

If you're just starting the Champix, stick with it. Quitting fags is worth the temporary side-effects.

As for getting through the tough times - you'll find a way, just remember, having a fag won't make it easier, it'll just make you regret having a ciggy.

Hi Linda :)

Well done deciding to stop smoking a big decision for most of us

I also used champix and found it was a great help having tried many other things to no avail over the years

Reading the links on here helps a lot and a fag will not help with stress or anything else Promise the champix will make you not want to smoke once it kicks in which takes a few days then just take it a day at a time and you'll find it much easier than you think to cope without a fag

You will find all the help and support you need on here as we all help each other just like a family we are here for you every step of the way cheering the good days and sympathising with the bad but the good far outweigh the bad

Read the posts on here you will find a lot of tips and advice and in the signatures of a lot you will find links to other sites just click on them Here are 2 I find very good to start you off whyquit.com and woofmang.com Read, read and then read some more as the more you read and learn about why you smoked and about your addiction the easier your quit will be

You asked for help on how to deal with stressful situations. The thought that popped in my head when I read that was "Tell me and we will both know." However, a wise cracking answer will not give you the tool you will need when the time comes.

The transition from smoker to non-smoker is not a smooth thing. We have to deal with life without the dopimine release that a lung full of smoke has been giving us. It is like needing a drink before we tell our other half some bad news.

I can relate to your question. There are times when the stress level of my job goes through the ceiling and I USED to go outside to the smoking area and with shaking hand light up, calm down, devise a plan of action, and then go back to work and dive in.

I finally came up with this. When I taught my children to ride a bicycle I showed them everything about riding, but I told them that you will have to figure out the balance thing on you own. I cannot do that for you.

You know that this will come and that is most of the battle. Forwarned is forarmed. OR Failure to plan is plannig to fail. You will just have to be ready with that cup of coffee or piece of gum or toothpick or maybe one of those hand things with the spring that is supposed to strengthen your grip. We all different and have individual needs. I went on long but I hope helped.

I am a day 4 person. glad you have joined us. we are November quiters.

there are loads of lovely people on here to help. dont do as I did and have just one if I had not I would be a week in morn.

I'll second Sue, if I hadn't fallen off I would be 1 months 19 days, instead I am day 6!!

Having a cig makes you feel guilty actually. Dave is right.

I found that herbal tea helps, don't know why!!

Hi there Linda,

Welcome and well done on your decision to quit!!!

I've found that in stressful times going for a walk and enjoying how much easier it is to breath going uphill helps in times of stress, also sipping ice cold water helps with the craves, i have spent a lot of time on this forum, and there are many fantastic people who have advised and encouraged when i have needed it.

Hi again, thanx for all your replies and support. I was more worried about taking the tablets and wandering if i'd have side effects which would interfere with my normal routine. Luckily i'm into day 5 and have not experienced any yet (fingers crossed) i am still smoking up to now, hoping by the time i get to day 8 i wont be wanting a cig.

Hey there,

I've just quit today (so maybe not best person to give advice ;) ), but I remember from previous quits the stressful times.

One piece of advice has stuck in my mind - it isn't the event that creates stress, it's the way we deal with it. Taking a deep breath and trying to remain neutral (or even positive, though that's maybe pushing it!) about the situation helps alot. Can't say I always manage it mind you, but it's a good habit to get into when you're quitting.

Aside from that, just let it all out! Let yourself go and have a good cry, it helped me in previous quits and am sure I'll be blubbering in the next few months! I'll always know that it's fleeting.....I won't be feeling sad/angry/stressed every day. Smoking, however, made me feel disappointed and angry with myself every day.

If I was you I would just decide on a day to stop and do it! I smoked till the 14th day and still didn't feel like stopping but knew I had to so I did. The champix did their work and I had hardly any cravings.

Hi Linny, good to see you here. Post lots, I found that kept me on the straight and narrow, and the support has been invaluable. Come join the Novemeber quitters group, we're fairly sane (hmmm) and it's nice to measure your progress with other people- it really helps when you don't feel so alone. It certainly helped me, as I quit alone, oh smoking still, work colleagues thinking it's a big joke etc etc, kids being totally uninterested. So, having this site has been such a bonus.

I didn't use Champix, but so many people rave about it, I'm sure you'll do great with it. Best of luck XX ;)

think into the future

One thing that has helped me was seeing past the moment. When I had the urge my brain would say...just one ...one won't make you a smoker. But I didn't fall for it....I would think what it would lead to....I would see myself having to smoke again...having to have a smoke in the AM, having to have a smoke before going into a store or the one more I would have to have right before bed. I would always come to the conclusion that the one would not be worth it because of what I knew it would lead to. I still play this game with myself only a lot less often now. You have to remember that you don't want to be a smoker.....you don't want all the yuck and hassel that accompanies it. I know it sounds silly but it does help.
