Am about to be booked in for the op ( Guy’s Hospital , London)
Any one any experience. I am hoping that I will be able to eat more and lose some of the bulk inside me . I’m getting fit for the op in approx a month . Any advice

Hello Jo,Yes, I had one of my polycystic kidneys removed 6 years ago. I was 57 so it had grown quite a bit and made me feel very -'full.' The opp took a while but obviously, I knew nothing about that at the time. It took a few weeks to get back to normal. However, I am so pleased I had it done. My body feels more easy now. I can breath better, and eating isn't uncomfortable anymore.
Wishing you the best.

PS I had mine done at Guys, they're the best! You're in good hands...
To be perfectly honest, it was so long ago, can't remember. I was in and out for a few things around that time. Also on dialysis too. Thankfully you won't have that to contend with that too and can just concentrate on getting better...😊👍
Got my nephrectomy booked for next Thursday at Guys Hopefully with Nico Kesseris . Feeling frightened but your experience is forefront in my mind and given me confidence
You'll be in very good hands with Nicos. Strangely, I'm in at the moment but leaving tomorrow hopefully. Wishing you all the best. Do let us know how you get on...😊
i had both my PKD kidneys removed in my transplant surgery (15 yrs ago). Post surgery was real painful for a few months afterwards. A huge open cavity..as my kidneys were newborn baby size. Such a good feeling to lose all that bulk. Best wishes!!
I’ll prepare myself. ! I can’t imagine the feeling afterwards . I’ve got so used to feeling full. I’m only having one out and still have a large polycystic liver .
A year after my transplant I was having problems with one of my PKD kidneys. I searched for a surgeon who could do a laproscopic nephrectomy. The surgeon said he had never only removed one kidney so I had both removed. The recovery was a bit more difficult than the recovery from my transplant, but I'm glad I had them removed. Good luck!
I had mine taken out November 2022 and later in March 2023 I received my liver/kidney transplant. They were over 20 pounds in weight. I had major breathing and digestive problems, on top of my other ailments. After the surgery, I was back to my old self and I'm now exercising and eating healthy. I wish I had taken them out a few years earlier, as my nephrologist had recommended. I was honestly scared, and it took me to have low quality of life to convince me to do it.
This has inspired me, I pushed to get this surgery . The surgeon said I was on the small side of big and I think would have left it . But I’ve just turned 60 and am in good health and feeling positive so think now is the moment !
I winder why they won’t take both out out but trust that they know what’s best ????
wow. That’s amazing and I’m so glad you are back to health. Well done. My liver is apparently not big enough to warrant a transplant so I’m having 1 kidney removed.
I’m doing pre-hab for the op now as it’s happening in about 4 weeks . I wonder what 1 kidney will weigh ?
