My transplant was 3 months ago. They told me I could have up to 2 drinks in a week, but I had to add extra water for everything I drank. They also recommended I didn't do it every week. I guess it depends on what your definition of "social drinking" is.

My nephrologist gave me the OK to drink socially. I only drink white wine. I am 22+ years post transplant.

I am 15 months post transplant. My nephrologist said I could have an occasional glass of red wine with dinner. I usually have it 2x per week. Is white supposed to be better for us? I asked if red was ok since I researched it’s supposed to help with immunity. I also put ice cubes in the glass and drink a lot of water when I do. Then again, I drink a lot of water every day; all day 😊❤️

I only drink white wine, because red can give me a migraine. I do think red is better for you.

Get sulfate free that is what causes red wine headaches.

I’m 20+ years post transplant and I drink socially but I also recognise that it’s a personal choice.Everything in moderation is a sensible approach.

Stay hydrated and never let it impact on you taking your medication.

We were all given a second chance at life and we should live it to the full, whatever that looks like for each individual!

Not much of a drinker but I’ve had people ask if I can grab a drink with them. How much time before or after meds do you wait to have a drink if you don’t mind me asking?

Nor am I, please don’t confuse “social drinking” with anything more than a few beers or glasses of wine when out with friends or family. My point is that I do allow myself a drink and it hasn’t affected me negatively. If truth be known, I’m not the scientific about the timing of taking my daily medication (I am aware that it should be 12 hrs apart). I take the first lot when I get up with breakfast and, if I was going out, I would take the “evening” tablets early evening or when I got home later so there would probably be a 1-2 hour gap before or after having a drink. More importantly I would be making sure that I’d eaten around the same time.

I would just add a reminder that 1 glass of wine is suppose to be only 4oz. That is 1/2 a cup. 1 hard alcohol drink is only suppose to have 1oz of hard alcohol. Most wine glasses are 8-10oz. Most restaurants use 2oz of hard alcohol per drink.Be specific when ordering at a restaurant or at friend’s house.

Congratulations on your kidney transplant!

I look at it this way. I received a gift and I’m going to take care of that gift. Being immune compromised is hard enough to deal with. I don’t care if others drink but I’m not going to do anything to damage my kidney. I don’t need alcohol or beer in my diet.
