Hi, has anyone been successful in securing or purchasing life insurance in the United States after being diagnosed with CKD and/or kidney transplant?
I want to be able leave something behind for my family. I was denied by State Farm. I’m assuming the major insurance companies will exclude pre-existing conditions and won’t even offer at higher rates. Had I known this when I was younger….

Hi - I was able to get a policy with Allstate through my employer with no questions. This was years ago. I had lupus and kidney disease, but they didn’t ask so I didn’t tell. When I tried to increase the coverage post transplant, the response was “no.” I have not looked elsewhere, but probably should. Also, we are trying to invest in other ways, other than life insurance, using the money we might spend on life insurance…so there is something for our family.I agree. I wish I had known that coverage would be a problem earlier too.
Thank you for sharing. It’s great that you’re finding other ways to invest. Man these are life lessons I wish we were taught early on. Navigating the system.
Hello Kidney 2014, I received my kidney in 2017 & I am in the same dilemma. I am getting close to 50 & I want my wife to able to pay off our home & leave my son some money if something should happen to me, but here is the real kicker, I’m a life insurance agent. I have a policy I got when I was young & healthy but the company I write for want even give me a policy after my transplant but try a term policy with Aflac I was told by an Aflac agent that they do sell life policies & they are more flexible with preexisting illnesses. I hope this helps Kidney2014, Good luck & be blessed.
Wow now that’s what I call hitting close to home. Glad you were able to pull out a policy when you were younger. Thanks for the tip, I’ll check out Aflac. Good luck and take care!
I also looked into life insurance. I could get a small policy to cover burial - not worth the premium.I spoke with my insurance agent at Liberty Mutual. They said in one year I can get a mortgage insurance plan (covers my mortgage completely in the event of my death). I just got my transplant on April 05, 2022. With house prices the way they are right now, I figured a free house would benefit my son (I’m a widow) and my Mom as much as a life insurance policy. Just an idea if you still have a mortgage on a house.
On a side note - Never lie or omit on a life insurance or mortgage insurance policy. My husband passed last year at 43 years old. They required documentation of exactly how he died and any causes. He had a massive heart attack, but luckily saw his doctor 10 days prior for his annual checkup - no high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Thank goodness I had that documentation.
Thank you. It’s been quite the year. I have no doubt my husband had a hand in me getting my kidney. I got the call exactly 9 months and 1 day from when he passed. What an amazing gift. I had horrible complications with Hemo Dialysis, but PD was ok….not great, but manageable. Monday will be a tough day for my family, but I’m blessed to have amazing friends and family to support my son and me. My husband passed on July 4th last year.
I tried years ago but had to do a urine test and they found protein so said no. I'm not sure it I could get it through work but I put money in a ROTH account and my 401k. I'm 58 and kids are all grown but there will be money for them when I die not tied to what an insurance company says or the hoops they make people go through.
