Things to keep in mind while taking Insurance for Post transplant patients in US?
If I were you, I would contact a transplant center where you were planning to move to. Ask to speak to a financial coordinator. They will probably be able to help you with your insurance questions.
Hello, I concur with what LavenderRabbit said to start with concerning medical insurance. I wish you the best.
Congrats on your transplant! I would strongly encourage you to follow the recommendation of Lavender Rabbit!
I agree with the others. Here, in the U.S., kidney transplant patients are covered by Medicare for 36 months if they are under age 65, and then their regular insurance takes over. You’ll need to make sure that your insurance covers kidney transplant related expenses.
I would also add that you need to check about Medicare and your immigration status. Medicare will continue to cover 2 anti-rejection meds for life (past the 36 months) for those that qualify for Medicare. Will you qualify for Medicare once you move to the U.S.? If not, it may be a bit difficult finding an insurance company to pay for those two meds.
I agree with others - speak to your U.S. based transplant team/hospital’s financial/billing department as soon as you can. Make sure to disclose your immigration status. You may also want to call Medicare directly to ask about the possibility of coverage for the 2 meds.
Good Luck!
