Hi I started taking bupropion 3 weeks ago to help me with my depression and I have experienced a lot of stomach cramps and now I have pain on my right side near the kidney not sure if I should stop taking the medication or not. Has anyone taken bupropion

I took it years ago, BEFORE my transplant but it didn't help all that much as I recall, as my depression was situational--that is, caused by external events in my life. When those situations resolved, the depression went away on its own.

I assume your transplant team is aware of you taking bupropion, and the prescriber of the bupropion is aware of the transplant and all the meds you take as a result? If not, make sure ALL of your team is on the same page. Definitely let your team know about the stomach pain and graft site pain! Pain is a signal that something is not right and the sooner it is addressed, the less damage it will do. Call your provider ASAP or get to the nearest emergency room if it's the weekend and your provider is closed.

There are medications for depression that can safely be taken in conjunction with all your transplant meds. I don't know how it is where you had yours done, but here in Seattle (at the University of Washington anyway), there is a transplant psychiatrist that I had to meet with during the evaluation process as well as at my one year and 18 month post check-ups. If there's someone like that available where you live, I would ask to see them. They would know what's safe to take and what your best options are. Best wishes!

No, I don't remember the name of the med. I was in another situationally induced depression and he wanted to put me on some med. I stopped him in his tracks and politely said no, I didn't want to take One. More. Med. I was confident that given a bit of time and the support of my counselor, that I would get through this latest stressor just fine. It's been a few months and while I wouldn't say I'm fine, I'm doing better. Check with your transplant psychiatrist.

Hi, I have been on it for years before my kidney transplant which was a year ago and never had any issues. Good luck!

Yes I do for a while. No stomach issues. Make sure you eat and take it with lots of water so it doesn’t sit in your stomach for too long. Hope that helps.
