Hi, my BMI pre transplant was 17,8 which is considered underweight and was still listed and got a transplant. I’ve gain weight since transplant 4 months ago. My BMI is now 20,3.

No. My weight was never an issue during the transplant process. The surgeon even told me that i was a ideal canditate since i had minimal fat in the adbominal area and no fat around my. organs. There was a possibily that if the donor kidney was too big that they would have a hard time closing my wound. Turns out it closed just fine.

I had to get my BMI up before I could get a transplant as well. My nurse out me on the anti-diet diet and told me to eat all the mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, milkshakes etc that I could.

Hi thank you . What do you mean by the nurse out on the anti diet diet ?

Whoops, that was a bit of a typo. I meant she put me on the anti-diet diet, meaning she told me to eat all the stuff that isn't typically considered "healthy." I wouldn't do that without consulting your team but it did help in my case.

With a BMI of 16.6 (119+/- lbs @ 5'11") weight was never an issue regarding the transplant. That came later after years of Prednisone where my BMI is not quite twice what it was at the time of the transplant.

Thank you! So your weight increased because of the prednisone I am assume?

Yes, I have been on the prednisone for 40+ years. Prior to the transplant I stuck pretty close to the CKD diet of 80mg of protein and 2Kmgs of sodium and potassium. Hence, the low weight prior to the transplant. Wish I was a little lighter in the mid-section today, but happier with the 39 yrs I've had with the transplant. Despite the prednisone. I'm sure some of my immediate weight gain was similar to tesslafera's diet post surgery. Nurse's were going out to restaurants within walking distance of the hospital to get me take-away meals, to fatten me up quicker. It was a VA hospital with great care but terrible food. Have always had and continue to have great health care providers.

Stay well!
