Hey since my transplant 8 months ago my hair has been falling out like crazy. My doctors say it will stop but it seem to just keep on falling out. Had any one els had this problem? Does it stop? And will the hair that’s fallen out ever grow back? It’s so obvious in the front and I’m scared to style it because it falls out more?!

Hair loss
Hi there! I hope everything is good with your transplant! I got my at the end of july 2020. End of october, i noticed a lot of hair everywhere!! I freak out and talked to my
Transplant team. They told me it can be because of the surgery/anesthesia and/or tacro. I’m om prednisone, tacro and cellcept. They refered me to a dermatologist which i’m still waiting for an appointment. It has slowed down a lot since October but still falls out more than normal. I see a few new baby hairs pop up in front and the sides. I also started biotin and a hair loss supplement that was approved by my team. I’m also a nurse and major stress like a surgery and the medication that they give you can cause what it called, telogen effluvium. It is a condition where surgery/stress/anesthesia causes your hair to go into the telogen phase which is the stage where the hair strands falls. It should slow down and a start to regrow after a few months. If it is caused by your antirejection meds, as they lower the dosage, hair loss should stabilize as well. Hope this helps. Stay safe and healthy! Happy holidays!
First off congrats on your transplant! I've also noticed the hair loss but biotin has helped tremendously.
The reason I found this website is because I was so upset about hair loss . I was transplanted 9/2019 and noticed hair loss 6 months later . I lost loads . It suddenly stopped and has started to grow back. It’s the front and top of scalp that it mainly happens I think. It’s finer and has a weird texture where it’s returning . It’s so much better though. I’m hoping it will return to closer to it’s pre transplant thickness eventually.I take Biotin and zinc ( after advice from team) and the lower the dose of Tacro the better.
Believe it will get better and try not to offer ficus ..... I didn’t manage that , it still really bothers me. Others don’t notice
Congrats on your transplant!!I think hair loss is a pretty common complaint. It seems to happen at about the 6 month mark. For me, it was my body getting over the major surgery and the immunosuppressant meds - Myfortic (Cellcept) and Neoral (Cyclosporine). I lost a lot of hair, or it least it seemed like it. Then my hair actually started to grow in thicker. Many on this site have not been that lucky.
Always talk with your transplant team. Don't start taking any OTC product for hair growth till getting the OK from your team. Maybe you should ask your team to give you a referral to a dermatologist.
Best of luck to you. I am living well 21+ years post transplant.
I, too, had the hair loss problem. Once I stopped the drug for Valley Fever it stopped a little. As time as gone on my hair is slowly getting thicker. I also take biotin and Viviscal. It seems to get better each day. Good Luck. I had my transplant 9/9/2019.
I can so relate. I’m having the same issue. I’ve been trying Biotin as my doc recommended, I’m seeing some improvement with shedding. Post transplant for 8 months.
I am just over a year post transplant and yes, it does stop falling out, but it certainly is awful to go through this - I wish someone had told me! Mine started about 4 months in. Hang in there, and hopefully you’re somewhere where you feel safe going to a hairdresser during covid so you can find a style that makes it less obvious. I can’t wait to go to a hairdresser as mine is growing back thick - but with baby curls, which is a bit unexpected!
All this talk about hair loss is freaking me out! Has anyone here NOT have their hair fallout?
It may not happen to you, for me it’s because my Tacrolimus dose is really high and hair loss is a common side effect
Hello on the same boat as you. Got my transplant in August 2020 and although I had noticed hair loss I had other things going on that when I finally got to dealing with it my hair was basically gone. I started some biotin and hair loss shampoo and DR recommend but honestly I am so s has taken a toll on me mentally. Please let me know if you find something that helps.
Hi! I had my transplant at the end of july 2020 and notice hair loss mid october. It was really bad. My doctors told be it could be du to tacro lr the surgerie well the stress of it and anesthesia. I une biotin supplements and hair growth shampoo. I’ve lost at least half of the hair i had. It slowed down at the end of december and right now it is not too bad, not loosing much. I’m starting to see baby hairs pop up. My hair turned dl and dry also.
