I have had issues with upper GI for well over 5 years, was taking Ranitidine but besides the recall - was probably not helping. My Gastrologist wants me to take a PPI or face surgery down the road to treat the hiatal hernia. I was wondering if anyone is taking a PPI and what their transplant doctors had to say about it. Mine have been saying in the past "oh don't take that" without a satisfactory explanation, or grasping the serious of the situation. I can find no problems of taking a PPI while on Cyclosporine. Also, the Gastrologist has not seen issues for transplant patients. While waiting for transplant team to clarify, anyone's experience with a PPI would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info, have had a the cough now for a about a year, but keeps people away from me in grocery store - lol. At this point feel safe about taking the PPI
I am on Protonix (pantoprazole) for GERD and have been since before transplant which for me was a year and four months ago. My nurse said there is a correlation between PPIs and kidney damage but not necessarily causation. Personally I have chosen to stay on the PPI because without it my GERD episodes are enough to keep me bed bound for a week at a time.
Thanks for sharing, my team finally got back to me late last night and said about the same thing as yours now that I sent them my endoscope results. Glad to hear that the PPI has been beneficial to you. Take care
I took one for years and prescribed by nephrology. I read something about not being able to take them in tandem with some transplant drugs. My medical insurance refused to pay for the drug and I never took it again. Nephrology put most of their patients on ppi drugs. I don't remember why. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Dont be sorry, this is helpful. My team clarified their policy on PPI's and they prefer Zantac, unless a Gastrologist says otherwise (no more since Zantac recall). But that has now changed since my endoscope results showed clear evidence I needed something stronger. Sorry to hear about the insurance issue, it sucks when they think they know more than the doctors. Take Care
Hi! I received my kidney transplant on july 28th 2020 and was prescribed pantoloc (pantoprazole) in post op for the first three months post transplant to help prevent acid reflux and GI problems since rejections meds can cause problemes. Havent had any GI or acid reflux with it.
Congratulations on the transplant, hope all is going well. Thank you for the info, I now feel a lot more comfortable taking Omeprazole on a daily basis, and having trust in my Gastroenterologist. He did mention that the inflammation was likely due to the years of meds I have been taken for the transplant and lupus. I have been dealing with this for several years and hopefully this is going to be helping.
I am almost one year post surgery and take Dexilant, which was prescribed for me at the hospital. My gastroenterologist says there is a lot of misinformation about Dexilant as newer research contradicted older information. He is glad I am taking it. So am I.
Sometimes a particular PPI cannot be tolerated while another will be fine.
I will get checked yearly for the unlikely, but serious, affect on eyes.
