Does anyone know if donor claims count toward the recipient's deductible if the donor is a family member who is on the same family health plan?
Deductible/Donor question: Does anyone... - Kidney Transplant
Deductible/Donor question
I would think so. My donor's expenses showed up as part of my regular claims. The transplant center would know.
If YOU are filing for all medical expenses associated with the Transplant then YES you can claim the Donor expenses.
IRS guidelines for Med expenses ( I used as a guide line, however with the new IRS rules for medical dedication - if you make say 100K and only if your expenses exceed 35K for a joint filing .. you may be able to get some $ back from IRS .. the 24K standard deduction has pretty much killed the medical expense deduction) ...
There is a social worker at your transplant center that can answer all of your questions regarding your insurance and living donor expenses.
Good luck
My son, the donor, was not on my plan but was covered 100%, including 90 after transplant surgery. There were some problems with the billing dept at the hospital. Some of my bills and some of my sons bills were not coded correctly and I had to spend time on phone with a billing rep to correct the problem. I was getting a co-pay charge on some of my bills and my son was getting 100% charged on some of his bills. Fortunately it had a happy ending , co-pays paid in full for us both resulting in 100% paid in full by insurance company!
