Hi I am 3 yrs post transplant and have been doing well. 3 months ago I had a serious UTI which spread to my kidneys and my function was very low. Post infection it started to recover but now I have another UTI,still serious but being treated before spread to kidneys. I am worried about my reduced function. Does anyone have any advice or similar experience?
Recurrent UTI: Hi I am 3 yrs post... - Kidney Transplant
Recurrent UTI
I have had this issue for years. And what makes it worse is that im very asymtomatic also so it gets very far along before i realize it. The last time it got so bad i was septic and in hospital. Some advice i was given was to use hibaclense to bath in private area which has helped but my nephrologist and i are also going to discuss a permanent low dose antibiotic to maybe help keep it under control. Hope that helps maybe.
MORE WATER!!
little reduction of immuno drugs may help
I realize this post is about two years old, but I'm relatively new here and hhave shared this issue. As I write this, it is September 8, 2021.
I'm almost two year post transplant and the first year, I had half a dozen UTIs. I too am nearly asymptomatic so one of them got into the new kidney and landed me back in the hospital for 3 days. The infectious disease people joined my team permanently at that point.
Their first treatment of choice was a vaginal estrogen cream. I personally don't get the connection between the problem and that as a cure, but I followed the directions and got another UTI about 6 weeks later, which was "right on schedule." Now I'm on Macrobid, a once daily antibiotic that has prevented further UTIs. Unfortunately I'm still on the cream as well, which is messy and doesn't smell vey good. But I haven't had a UTI in over 6 months, so I'll continue to follow their directions. Hope this helps.
