COVID-19 and Kidney "issues"
As a Team Captain for the NKF Walks to raise money for all the fabulous work they do, I get to participate in a call or two with others like myself. This year I learned something I feel I NEED to share - not as a scare tactic, but as information to arm yourself with only!
COVID-19 seems to be having an effect on kidneys; not yet known is if it's short term or permanent, but I wanted to make everyone out here aware and to take that extra precaution for yourself if you are a living donor like myself. I had not previously considered myself HIGH RISK for COVID-19 at all, but now I am... just taking another moment to THINK about anything I do to ensure I am not putting myself at any further risk. Here is a small statement from the NKF and I'm sure there is more information on their kidney.org website if you look:
"COVID-19 is causing acute kidney injury (AKI) in about 15% of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. We must stop the spread of this virus before more lives are lost or more kidneys are damaged!"
