Tips on cleaning PD drain 'jug'

Hi everyone!

I've been doing PD for almost a year now and overall it is going well and it is certainly better than hemo (which I did for almost 2 years).

Anyone doing PD who uses the drain jug thing (don't know the technical term obviously) who has any tips on getting rid of the smell/cleaning it. I would love your advice.

Best,

Joanne

Are you talking about the drain bag ?

yes - but instead of a bag I have this big jug

My hubby didn't use a drain bag - he simply ran a line over to the commode. If you're using a jug or a bucket, perhaps you can follow up with bleach to remove anything contributing to the odor? I know our commode seemed to "grow" things quickly in it with PD so I simply cleaned and used bleach often.

thanks Darlenia! I do use bleach. Were you doing that weekly? Daily? I wish I had a toilet nearby that I could just put the drain line into.

I definitely bleached weekly...and occasionally more often. Drove me crazy! So I completely understand your frustration. Maybe you can ask your dialysis center to give you an extension line to attach to the current one to reach your far-away toilet or shower drain. We had to be firm about that since it comes out of the center's budget, apparently insurance generally doesn't pay for it. But we insisted. That drain fluid definitely has nasties in it. Lol.

Does your Clinic offer you disposable drain bags...that's what I use...then just throw them away

Good idea too!

yes I could use a drain bag but don't they get super heavy? The thing with the jug is I can keep that on this roller thing that I can roll into the bathroom to empty where the bag might not stay in place (on the roller I mean). I will try bleaching more often - thanks for the responses! :)
