I am on dialysis now for 5 months. I still have a chest access. and itching becomes quite severe at times around the access. Does anyone else have this? ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Itching

Hi!, my husband has been on dialysis for over a year and this happened to him as well. It could be an excess of cleaning solution that didn’t dry well before placing the dressing or maybe your phosphorus levels are a little bit higher. In my husband’s case we talked to our Nephrologist and he prescribed a cream to avoid itchiness and some tablets. I hope this can be helpful.
Thanks!! Do you know what the cream was?
I had the exact same thing, I scratched so bad I would bleed. It was the solution they use to clean the area, it looks like a q-tip. I am also allergic to most of the tape they use. I use a tape that is blue in color, most places do not have that, paper tape does not make me itch either. For cleaning they have to use alcohol or a product called ExSept, it is a wound cleaner. They should either have it there, can order it or get it from the PD dept. So, change cleaning solution and tape, you will be good to go.
My husband also uses Exsept, his dialysis clinic provides that. Like checkman said, maybe you can be sensitive to the dressings or the tape. I found a window dressing that has a mild glue but resistant enough to protect your exit site
If it helps my dialysis center uses paper tape and EXSEPT As a wound cleaner because I am allergic to latex. Prior to using these it would each up a storm and I’d have to take Benadryl.
