I have read a lot about being careful with your fluid intake while being on PD. I’ve been careful with how much I give my mother fluids even with everything she eats. Does anyone know what’s the right amount? I feel that she’s getting dehydrated and her skin is starting to wrinkle more. Is this just the changes a patient goes through? Any guidance to help my mother is appreciated.

Fluid intake

Hi, everyone is different and fluid intake depends on how much fluid you pass as urine. I think the rule of thumb is how much urine you pass in a 24 hour period plus 500mls.
You should really speak with the PF nurse/Doctor about fluids as it important to stay hydrated but also not to carry excess fluid as well. It’s a bit of a balancing act!
Good luck and I hope all goes well. x
Good morning, AC320. 😊 I suggest that you speak to your mother's nephrologist or dietician to discuss your concerns. I'm sure they could guide you best since they know your mother and her medical problems.
God bless you.
Low sodium is something my son has problems with, but he was drinking high levels of fluids. His sodium dropped to 104 and he was hospitalized. His behavior was still normal...he was walking around and talking normally, but sodium this low is nothing to mess with. It can cause confusion and seizures so you are right to be concerned. As always, let your health care workers know your thoughts. Best of luck.
My doctor and nurses would always check my ankles for signs of swelling, which is often an indication of excess fluid. I would ask your nephrologist or nurse.
500ml plus the amount of output e.g if your urine output is 200ml perday then u need 700ml liquid in 24 hours.
