I was 22 when I started Dialysis I had no warning So I had time to prepare. There were some challenges that I had face the diet being one of them most young people are used to be able to eat what they want. One of the things I did was to experiment in the kitchen with the foods I could have, it was actually fun because we never knew what we would come up with. My parents helped to a lot of the times eating what I could eat and my mother also came up with some good recipes.NKF also has an app that I used quite a bit called my food coach which you input what type kidney failure you have and it also has recipes and gives you the quite a few nutritional facts to help you track things such potassium, phosphorus and so on even if you are going out to eat. This really helped me to be able to even go out to eat and to stay with in my restrictions.

The Anthony's reply was excellent.

I'm stage 5 and had my dialysis fistula created nearly two years ago when my kidney function had dropped to crisis point, but then I gave up work and my kidney function improved slightly I've managed to maintain that improved function and despite feeling dreadful at times I've been able to postpone the start of dialysis.

My advice is to ask for advice from the specialist renal dietitian. I copied the booklets the she gave me and gave them to family and friends who I thought might cook for me. I carried my copies around in my handbag so that I could check whether as food was to be avoided and I used it to help me plan menus.

Watch out for little things such as not drinking filtered water (home filters contain potassium), no instant coffee and no decaffeinated coffee.

Watch the salt, potassium and phosphate levels of processed foods.

Good luck.

The diet can be fun as you try new foods on the list. I manage to substitute the foods that I was eating. I am a diabetic too, so I really have to worry about what carbs I eat. The biggest thing is to be consistent so your phosp and k levels will not go higher.

Sorry, hon. Have not been on dialysis. Worked at dialysis center for 7 years-eye opening. I am 79 years old and don't plan on ever getting dialysis. I have ckd 2-3. Partially from age, partially from Prilosec- a stomach acid reliever. I watch my protein intake-40g or less per day. Also, drink about 60 Oz water per day. So, holding my own. STRONGLY RECOMMEND WATCHING DIET AND DRINKING BOTTLED WATER.

I didn't know prilosec is bad for the kidney. now that i don't have kidney function(on dialysis),maybe it doesn't matter to use Prilosec. I will use bottled water more often too.
