Hello,

My son has been on dialysis for five years after his transplant failed after three year. The doctor says he need parathyroid surgery to remove the glands that are malfunctioning. Has anyone had this surgery and be willing to share their experience?

Hi cynthia346

I have it done twice. If it can no longer be controlled with medication it is better to remove them. Parathyroidectomy is a very simple operation done under general anaesthesia. It was a while ago and can't remember all the details. There is nothing to worry about anyway.

There is a drug called sensipar. It is expensive but there is a card available from drug company that reduces cost to $5.

Thanks for the information. I'm worried about the side affects of this drug.
