Morning.. I appreciate what I have learned from this great group of people!! Anxiety seems to creep in whenever I have a lab change or symptom … I am 72 with one kidney CKD 3a ( long story) in general I have protected it for past 40 years..
Arthritis in my knees has raised its ugly head and as always I can’t take any oral NAID meds..My primary suggested diclofenac 1 % gel .. looking for an opinion from this group on short term use..or other suggestions..
My GFR is 54 to 62 only lab off is creatinine just a little elevated .
Thank you

I’m so sorry to hear of your plight. I can’t really be of help but would like to ask a question if I may.
At what stage did you lose your other kidney?? My last labs showed I had stage 3a and having lost both my younger brother in 2023 and just lost my dad on November 7th to kidney failure should I be seeing a renal specialist for mine? My PCP told me that my levels weren’t to be concerned about until they drop to 2a. Knowing I’ve lost 2 family members to kidney failure I disagree with him. What advice can you give me from your experiences??
Thank you for any of your wisdom that you can give me.
Hi Honey bug!! Thank you for communicating😊 and sharing!
I am sorry for you family losses and understand your concern. Yes…. see a specialist.
They don’t know when I lost the kidney maybe as a child with severe kidney infection. I did not know it until I was in my 40’s with a blocked ureter … and had to have a stent.. very scary .. fast forward 30 years The kidney has always been good! Thank God🙏 And I am super protective! I have only seen a nephrologist the past 18 months mostly due to major heart surgery..
I think.. if you are 3 a and have such a family history it world be good to get established with a specialist go with your concern and if they say see you in a year or two great!!!
You are the best protective level over your kidneys!!! God Bless.. and Happy Holidays
Thank you so much for your pearls of wisdom. I’m so sorry you didn’t find out about your kidney loss for so long. That’s truly scary. I brought my concerns to my Dr more than a decade ago. I’m a severe diabetic and have autoimmune disease too so I’m glad to get your insight on this. It was discovered with more testing that dad had a massive right sided malignant bladder tumor. He was known to eat salt sandwiches and place at least a 1/4 “ of salt on his food without ever tasting it first. He knew he was in renal failure for years but at mid 90s he said he wasn’t curbing anything. I watched him suffer a lot these last few years and the end was awful. I have enough pain don’t wanna go like that!!!
Again thank you so much. 🤗
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours. Abundant blessings. Gentle hugs love and prayers.
I don't have kidney issues, my husband has a kidney transplant-so I've learned quite a bit about medications following his journey. I've used Voltaren (diclofenac 1% gel) often for knee osteoarthritis with no impact on my labs. I've since received hyaluronic acid injections directly in both knees in place of cortisone injections (which may be harmful to knees in some ways.) My orthopedic doctor prefers I stay away from both aspirin (acetylsalicylic) type products as well as the tylenol (acetaminophen) type medications - noting the first damages kidneys and the other damages the liver. Since arthritis tends to be chronic, he's probably witnessed the outcomes of long-term use of both types. But he was quick to approve Voltaren and the hyaluronic injections.
My dad had severe Arthritis in his knees and was prescribed Capsicum (Chilli) cream. He said it gave good temporary relief. Also Bee venom cream gets very good reviews and is also supposed to be helpful for CKD.
I had some joint pain with lupus and used Voltaren diclofenac 1% gel with no problem. Can't say it helped my particular pain all that much, but it did help some. This is at the same time I began to purposefully take a little more than the recommended amount of NSAIDs for the pain, and my BP was up, and at the next thing I knew, pouf, CKD.
I have had osteo since my late 20s and CKD since 29 after AKI. I had both knees, both hips replaced, both ankles fused, and both elbows fused…My eGFR has been below 20 since 1996. I’d much prefer replacement to meds…long term pain/anti-inflammatory meds kill nephrons…joint replacements require 2weeks of bad meds, not potentially the rest of your life…for us, it’s a trade off…I couldn’t live with the joint pain after 10/15 years so finally had double knee, double hip and double ankle replacements…much better today, eGFR 17-21, I’m 57…pick your poison…is the pain bad enough yet…it will be most likely…I’ve now had both hips, both knees, replaced, both ankles fused…life is much better without the pain. EGFR was 21 before those 4 massive surgeries…now it’s 17…but I was 38 when it was 21 now I’m 58. So age or surgery? Don’t know?!? But I do know I’m not lying awake for 10 days due to osteoarthritis pain. That was my thought process anyway…my best to you!
