creatinine in old age--an interesting question

I am 76 year old Indian man with excellent health and no health issues like B.P, thyroid, Liver lssues, Diabetes etc.,No protein in urine.

Even all my my kidney parameters are normal including all electrolytes, BUN, Uric Acid, Urea etc. etc.

My nephrologist says that not to worry. Just monitor creatinine as it goes up due to age

The only issue is since last 5 years my creatinine is around 1.95mg/dl.

I am very particular about my diet and exercise .

I have an interesting question:

My muscle mass % on Omron body composition machine is 27.9%, which i think is less .

May be due to old age there is muscle mass loss.

Today I have read as under :

*Muscle mass and creatinine production*: Skeletal muscle is responsible for producing creatinine, a waste product that's filtered by the kidneys. When muscle mass decreases due to sarcopenia, the kidneys have to work harder to filter the same amount of creatinine, which can lead to increased creatinine levels.

2. *Reduced renal function*: Sarcopenia is often associated with reduced renal function, which can impair the kidneys' ability to filter waste products, including creatinine. This can cause creatinine levels to rise.

3. *Inflammation and oxidative stress*: Sarcopenia can lead to chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, which can damage kidney tissues and impair renal function, further increasing creatinine levels.""

I AM SURE ALL OF US BELIEVE THAT THE MORE WE DO WEIGHT TRAINING CREATININE WILL RISE.SO HOW COME ABOVE LOGIC I.E.

"" IF I INCREASE MY MUSCLE MASS WITH STRENGTH TRAINING MY CREATININE WILL GO DOWN AS IT WILL LOWER SARCOPENIA""

I am an older senior (in 80s) and experience muscle wasting due to age. It is difficult doing certain exercises not only due to age but other medical conditions.

Here is a link to National Kidney Foundation and new CKD calculator.

The CKD diet is helping me on keeping CKD level moderate.

Keep us posted on how you are aging with CKD.

nice to hear that. If you do not mind how much is your egfr and how many years have you been maintaining those levels

My eGFR hangs around 60 with my diet I have been on for over 6 years. When I was diagnosed it was 48.

It's the opposite. More muscle more creatinine. However I would not be worry at all. Your values are still great. Trust your neph and enjoy your health. All the best

I agree with Tolmezzo's comment about the creatinine-muscle relationship. Also likely more pronounced for us males ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
