Is the amount of protein in the blood from muscle breakdown from strenuous exercise/massage/stretch significant? Have effect of proteinuria?

I have CKD3b. I plan to do some deep stretching and aggressive self-massage on a daily basis for awhile so I am wondering if I need to back off of the amount of protein in my diet.

lmthoms00, the recommendation to go easy with meat when diagnosed with CKD is because meat makes the kidneys work harder and the thought is that it might slow down the progression of the disease.

It has nothing to do with protein in the urine. Proteinuria happens when the kidney is not functioning properly and will happen regardless if you just ate or not - your body maintains a fairly constant level of albumin in your blood. Typically with Proteinuria you will see albumin in the urine and lower level than normal (not always) of albumin in the blood. When the kidneys are working properly they don't allow for albumin which is a fairly large molecule to slip into the urin.

Thanks for helping me understand the science of it, I appreciate.

hi Imthoms00, so just trying to get my head round this. With proteinuria if you have less protein (albumin) in the blood would that explain achy tired muscles? Just pondering

I wouldn't be surprised if you're creatinine crept up and your eGFR crept down, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do all the stretching etc. Sounds like a healthy effort. My eGFR varies by a few points from blood draw to blood draw, and I'm happier since I quit worrying about it You should probably intuit whether overdoing exercise is a healthy thing, if that comes up.

I don’t know al the science behind it, but doing a workout right before getting bloodwork can affect your numbers, as in increase creatinine and I think lower gfr.

When you have CKD it's very important to find out how mung protein you take in. It's a real pain but but your kidneys can't process high amounts like people with out our disease. I've been a weight lifter for most of my life, but my Nephrologist cult me down to the maximum amount. My nephrologist is not a believer of foam in your urine as a sign of that, If you do high degree physical exercise it builds up creatinine which your kidneys can't use what you build up in your muscles.

i appreciate getting important correction of my faulty theorizing about this, thanks!

I am not sure the time it takes for protein to be processed. However do know that if you eat a meal rich in protein (beef steak, etc.) and have labs done the next day, your creatinine will take a jump. You should be following an almost vegetarian diet, based on your labs. When you eat red meat, your kidneys have to work harder and your creatinine climbs.

Maybe your nephrologist can suggest a dietician for you to see. Can help you with a kidney friendly diet. Make sure they see your lab results - sodium, phosphorus, magnesium, etc.

Many on this site have been able to stabilize their CKD and/or slow down the progression by changing their diet.

Check out the NKF website.
