Stopped Lisinopril and Signifcant Improvement

3 months ago my creatinine level was 1.59 and gfr 44, I was freaking out figured I'd be on a machine in a short time.

Nephrologist took me off lisinopril.

Now (3 months later) levels are 1.4 and 53. Urine blood work is fine all other blood work is normal.

I'm 74 years old and work out for 2 hours a day so hopefully I have a few more years.

If Creatinine is a little high drink lots of water a few days prior to blood tests, could reduce numbers and ease the worry. I'm also reducing meats significantly and eating more salads and fish.

Hi Erniep15 - That is great news. I was never told to limit protein. Matter of fact when I started spilling protein in 1986, my mom would cook ribeyes for me almost everyday to replenish the protein that I was losing (for anyone reading this, this is a big NO-NO!!)My nephrologist at the time knew about my protein intake. In the early days, I was told only to limit sodium. Later on, i was only told to limit foods high in phosphorus. I did have a successful transplant in 2014, thankful, and doing well. However, to have had the knowledge we have now about diet…who knows, I may not have needed a transplant. Best of luck to you. This is really great news!

From what I know all ACE inhibitors increase a bit creatine. So it's normal you had improvement. In medicine science is always matter to find compromise between benefit and side effects. Rgs

I was the same with Losartan. I was on a small amount and my gfr was consistent at 44 for months. Then my consultant was on holiday and I got his assistant. She increased my dosage to almost 3 times my normal dosage. My gfr dropped almost 10 points. I could never get back into my 40s again. I refused to ever be treated by her again after that.

Hi there. I am also on Lisinopril. Did your neph put you on a different blood pressure medication that worked better?

replaced Lisinopril with Amlodipine and numbers improved within 3 months. Neph said that Lisinopril can sometimes negatively impact kidneys after longtime usage.
