Good afternoon to all, I just read my latest blood work results and my kidneys have improved! My EGFR has come up from being a few points from stage 4 to 3a!! My creatinine is 1.17, bun 8 mg, protein 6.5, albumin 4.0g/dL, calcium 9.2mg. Nothing flagged even though I still have ckd. I have been praying before and after testing for improvement and am happy that prayers are being answered. Thank you so much to all of you who have given great advice and are walking through this disease with me. I bought the Lee Hull book, Stopping Kidney Disease and am still studying it. It’s quite long and a lot to process. I am mostly vegetarian now but do eat salmon almost once a week. I am drinking lots of water, 10-12 cups a day. I have also lost almost 30 lbs after 5 months of changing diet. Thank you so much and I continue praying for all of you. 🙏🏻

Thank you! I’m going to remember where I was and the fear I felt.

Wow!! Amazing work, I’m sure it was not easy to change your diet so much. Do you mind sharing if you follow a very low protein diet? So all your labs improved not just the eGFR? Your doctor must be stunned.

Thank you. I took a lot of advice from you folks on here. Everyone said research and gave diet advice too. Turns out fear is a great motivator! My diet is not very low protein but more of a low protein. I eat mostly plant based foods but do include salmon and once in awhile eggs. I rarely eat any chicken. I never eat red meat. I limit sodium bc of high bp which has also improved. My bp Med dosage has been reduced. I quit drinking diet pop or any diet drink and any pop. I changed primary care dr bc I was not notified of stage 3b. I see a neph but did not take her advice. I took advice from everyone on here about changing diet. I wish everyone on here would have better kidney health. I am humbled by how low some of your EGFR’s are. I’m so sorry. Yes, all labs are improved from what they were.

I haven’t spoken with dr yet but she must be as surprised as I was. Praise God! Prayers for all of you.

Thank you for sharing Hello67! I eat small amounts of fish or chicken too. I haven't yet seen a change for me but maybe it hasn't been long enough. Thank you for motivating me, I need to continue with the vegetables...I don't love them yet :)

Yes please stay motivated. It is worth it and maybe you can find ways to like vegetables more, Spices & herbs help. Certain fruits are really good too. And, make sure not to eat much chicken. Stick with it. Prayers for you. 🙏🏻

Really great news and well done for taking control of your own health.

(In a theological twist .. not having had an eGFR improvement despite stuffing my face with plants 'til I'm green in the face ..

Praise God!)

First thing I'm going to do with my glorified body is head down to my heavenly plebotomy lab and relish in an eGFR of 120!!

After that (and assuming the lion literally lies down with the lamb and I can't have a hamburger anymore), I'm going to order the biggest Beyond Burger I can find with a slab of melted Stilton wedged in between the highest protein bun available.

Wow good job and congratulations. Is the diet the reason behind this improvement?

Hello67 profile image
Hello67 in reply to Serlo92

Thank you. I believe it is. No medication change except for reduction in lisinopril so maybe that had an effect too.

Jamok profile image

Wonderful! I wonder if in your case the reduction in weight and lowered blood pressure along with lowered bp meds had a positive affect on your gfr.

Hello67 profile image
Hello67 in reply to Jamok

I wonder that also. I don’t know but it may have helped.

That is terrific news and thanks for the kind offer of prayers. As someone who believes I have been given these last 26 years because of the power of prayer, that really touches me personally. Just one thing I took from your original post, please don’t live in fear. As a person of faith you know what any of the major faiths “Good Books” say you cannot live that way. Also, it isn’t a death sentence what we all deal with, at least not imminent anyway, so live life with the full conviction you will make the absolute most of every day so graciously given. Sure, we have to do things people with”normal” kidneys don’t and the prospect of dialysis and or transplant (or being denied a transplant because of age, health etc) are scary and can cause a feeling of despair. However, I have come across research recently that shows only about 3% of all CKD patients yearly move to stage V and face those repercussions. Not AKIs but just a “normal” progression to needing dialysis and/or transplant. I took heart from that number and low percentage (not to denigrate or make less of those of us who are facing the move to stage V as I know those numbers/percentages mean nothing to them) because every year you or others don’t need the dialysis or transplant brings us a year closer to much better options being tested now. So hopefully if you can stop progression where you are and stave off those two rather life altering yet the only current choices, you can benefit from all the new treatments being developed. Anyway, my point is after this diagnosis shape your life to do what brings you pleasure and rewards in all aspects of your life. Don’t chase the dollar simply to have great wealth or just average wealth instead make a career choice/change to do what makes you fulfilled. Give back to other CKD patients anyway you can. Take the trip you have been putting off, make amends, don’t fight or hold grudges, help others and when feeling down seek support. Life is too short anyway and our MAY be shorter still.

Just my opinion.

Thank you for your words of wisdom. You’re right we are not to live in fear. I’m so glad you know the power of prayer. I have seen so many miracles in my own life and in my son’s even though sadly he has passed away. I believe that God is answering prayers as evidenced by my improved numbers in my last blood work.

I’m so sorry you deal with so many major health issues and will keep you in prayers. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I’m so happy for you! Great work changing your diet. It surely is worth the effort. My hubby follows a strict plant based diet ( no added sodium) with prayer & his transplant (though stg 3 from day 1, elderly donor kidney) has stayed wonderfully stable, praise God.

Thank you so much! You’re right, it is worth the effort of changing diet. I’m so glad that your hubby is doing well and still eats healthy! Prayer and a God of miracles, what blessings He gives! I love hearing about miracles and telling about miracles I’ve experienced. God bless 🙏🏻
