Hey y'all! 30 y/o F with genetic stage 3 CKD. GFR in say...mid 40s? Started crossfit on a whim after appointment with nephrologist in September so doc doesn't know. Going in Feb for check-up. Before I go wanna know if any of y'all who are exercise enthusiasts partake in strenuous exercise and if you do how it has affected your GFR? I keep hydrated and get enough electrolytes per my neph. I push myself but never enough to where urine looks dark or rhabdo is possible. Thanks!
Btw, I know strenuous exercise can be tough on the kidneys. I've had the conversation with my neph since I'm a volunteer firefighter. Just wanted to know if anyone has had experience with their GFR getting better or worse from hard types of exercise. Much love!

Everything in moderation. With kidneys being affected by excessive and strenuous physical activity it isn't prudent to overdo exercise and risk further damage with higher creatinine and lower GFR numbers. I bike, walk, and from time to time play racquetball. In warmer months I will go on a long bike ride but never within a few days of my labs. In cold and wet weather I use an indoor machine to keep active. If your physician(s) have approved your exercise regimen then you have to decide, based on your numbers, if you are doing too much.
i am 53 and went went from 1.5 to 1.3 (tested twice in 6 months. ) 2nd time i was not hydrated and worked out the day before. Depending on what calculator you use for gfr i am between 62-78 and there is one that takes the difference and its about 70. I am good to have it there the rest of my days. I do cross-fit - push sled / tire lifts , etc. the tire does weigh 177lbs and sled i don't know but i do put weight on it . For me,the key is eating healthier, keep red meat to about 16-18 ounces per week , salads, fish, chicken , turkey, fruits and veggies. Lost about 30 lb in the process and BP went from 134/90 to 117/76. I do believe you need to get your body exercising. My doctor even when i was at GFR 53 didn't advise to do anything but get hydrated and lose some weight. I personally believe, getting fit is all part of the process but your DR will tell you what you need to do and how much. If all your other blood work is fine , your Dr will probably tell you the same thing but Check with your Dr 1st.
