Allergy medication: Thank you everyone to all... - Kidney Disease
Allergy medication
Hi Dan,
Check with your PCP and possibly nephrologist about the allergy medication.
I use Flonase spray and saline to follow when the pollen kicks up.
I have been given Claratin non-drowsy with a Z- pack when I have had a sinus infection, but my kidney issue may differ from yours.
Remember that I am discussing it with you, but your best bet is the doctor.
Let me know the outcome.

Some OTC allergy medications are harmful to your kidneys. My suggestion is to start with your pharmacist, even two different ones, letting them know about your health issues. I'm on Medicare and use two different pharmacies and I feel I can trust their input. Take their suggestions and look them up and then ask your nephrologist and PCP for their input. I had to go this route and can take an occasional Benedryl
Good question. My husband, who is on dialysis but still has some kidney function, went to the doctor for a spreading body rash. It's fall here with lots of falling leaves, rain, etc. He was diagnosed with allergies and told to purchase Children's Zyrtec, after the doctor researched it. (Hubby was impressed that he took the time to do so.) I noticed that there is a kidney/liver/age warning on the bottle. So I agree with everyone here to check with your medical professionals before purchasing any allergy product.
Interesting! Maybe it being that children’s does that’s why he felt it was safe to take it? Every over-the-counter and everything that we see it says it causes kidney liver etc. damage
I think so. The doctor's visit was yesterday. He did take one children's tablet last night (lasts 24 hours) and his rash, while still visible, no longer itches. So the smaller dose works for him. And his numbers are holding steady...no rise in blood pressure or increase in swelling thus far. My hubby is older and slender.
