Hi there, I’m writing as a lay person on CKD so thought someone could provide insight. My mother in law is visiting from the Philippines and we’ve applied to sponsor her. The government won’t approve if she’s likely to need dialysis. She’s a diabetic (on metformin), her serum creatinine is slightly elevated, electrolytes normal and egfr is 48. Any thoughts on prognosis? Obviously dependent on a lot of factors but just throwing it out there! Thanks!!

Stage 3A7,?
Correction: Stage 3a
We aren't qualified to make any diagnosis or prognosis in this community. However, you are basically asking a political question here and not a medical one. The answer is complicated. At this time it is difficult for someone to enter the USA under the circumstances you are dealing with. That may change in the next year or so but that won't help you now. If your mother should be allowed entry here and would need to be on dialysis at some time would that affect her dialysis treatment if she returned to the Philippines for that treatment?
Depending on the cause of her CKD, dialysis can be slowed down for a very long time if the underlying issues are under control.
Best of luck to you and your mother in the decisions you will have to make.
Thank you so much for your reply. Although there are immigration implications, I do very much care about my in-law’s well being and want to ensure she has the best care plan. I wasn’t aware that this was an American site as we are Canadian, not that it changes her condition. Her diabetes is likely the cause and that’s well controlled so hopefully we can keep her well for a long time. Thanks again for your thoughtful and quick reply.
While this is not an American site, I did make the assumption that you were inquiring about the USA. My apologies for the misunderstanding. I have no idea about immigration policies for Canada. Perhaps one of our cousins to the north will be able to assist. Best of luck.
