Constipated.. what to eat on renal diet?

What are some natural food that can help avoid constipation while on renal diet?

I used to eat Belvita breakfast biscuits which work pretty well as it was full of fiber. But seems Belvita is really high in potassium. Looking for a substitute.

Speak to a renal dietitian. Your kidney-friendly meal plan will be based on your personal lab results. One size does not fit all.

HI curiousmind,

I agree with seeing a renal dietician if that is possible. I checked the nutritional value of Belvita bars and it said there was only 85-90mg of potassium in a serving of 4 bars. That's not a whole lot in the scheme of things. It will be hard to find something with fiber with less.

However, here are some things to check out. Constipation can be caused by many things. The first is insufficient water. Are you restricting your water intake? You do not say what stage you are at and that makes a difference. But stages 2-4, they recommend you consume 2 liters of water a day.

What medications are you on? That be an issue to check with your doctor and you can read the labels and side effect information. I know iron tablets are very constipating.

Natural foods that I enjoy to help with this situation are apples and oatmeal. The oatmeal is the old fashion kind you have to cook with no sugar. I add stevia. I have high potassium so I have to be careful with things. I also eat a big salad with red or green leaf lettuce with red and green peppers probably every other day. I also eat Orvill's smart pop-corn. Love pop-corn but you have to watch the salt.

I've been buying Skinny Pop popcorn. It has salt, but contais much less sodium than regular popcorn. My potassium is low, so I have to take K tablets and eat high potassium foods to keep the level above 4.2 or I go into an arrhythmia. I tried to find a renal dietician and there is no such animal in my geographical area, so I am trying to manage my diet on my own.
