I was wondering if any else has problems with their tongue. I was diagnosed with Geographic Tongue about 5 months ago. I have a coating on my tongue and have sore spots and also a metallic taste. I don't know whether this is Kidney related or not. I have CKD stage 5, last lab results were GFR16. I have my meeting with the Transplant Team tomorrow.
Sore tongue: I was wondering if any else has... - Kidney Disease
Sore tongue
HI Cooperdog,
Never heard of geographic tongue so I looked it up. Seem like it is not related to CKD other than the fact it might be an autoimmune disease. But I would check with the doctor.
Metallic taste in mouth is a common symptom at stages 4 and 5 of CKD; I sometimes get it.
Have you been checked for diabetes? I ask that because my tongue has never been sore but it did burn for a while until I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes! Good luck with the transplant team. My prayers are with you!
Hi Carosuz2016, im not sure about being checked for diabetes but it is something to ask about. Meeting with Transplant Team went very well, I feel a bit more at ease now having seen them. My prayers are also with you, take care.
My tongue has a terrible coating on it that goes all over my tonsilis too and right down the back of my throat and this happened when my renal function was at 12%. I had biopsies, swabs the lot and countless number of pastes and sprays but what they concluded was that my mouth was dry from the limited fluid I was on so wasn't cleaning my tongue so best to gargle with month wash and I've also been given salix spray and pastels. I try and drink little 100ml frozen bottles of water at a time.
I would love to say it gets better with time but it's more a case of getti g use to it.
Thank you Charlene for your reply. Its a horrible thing isn't it, as if we don't have enough to contend with. It does make sense that if the mouth becomes dry then problems like this will occur. I have tried lots of mouthwashes but not tried the spray. Fingers crossed that this gets better. Hope you are keeping well.
Have you, by chance, been on antibiotics? I’m sure docs would have asked about this; however, when I take certain antibiotics I get a fungal (yeast) overgrowth on my tongue and sometimes it goes down into my throat and esophagus. My tongue, mouth, and esophagus becomes coated with a yellowish/whitish coating, is irritated, and “burns” when I eat acidic foods. Evidently, per docs, my balance between bacteria and fungus is disturbed with the antibiotic drug. I am prescribed lozengers and a mouth swish and swallow med which, along with finishing the antibiotic clears up
The overgrowth. May sometimes be called “thrush”, but I’m not sure of that.
Just a thought. Prior to my transplant, I also, recall mentioning to my nephrologist that I was experiencing a metallic taste.
Hi SaraEads, no i haven't been on antibiotics. The doctor initially said it was thrush but when it didn't go away he said it was Geographic Tongue, something I had never heard of. Prior to seeing the Doctor about a month before I burnt it with hot tea and was really sore. He said it wasn't connected to the burn. The metallic taste isn't there all the time so not sure wether this is connected either. Hope you are keeping well. Thank you for your reply.
I have been looking at your previous posts and seen that you are 15 years post transplant. This is a real inspiration to me as I am 61 and going through the process of being listed. Hope you continue with good health for many more years to come.
