Rapid decline in gfr

Am trying to understand why GFR which has been 49 for years suddenly dropped to 28. Does anyone know what might cause this?

It might just have been a one off. Did you do anything different around the time of your blood test. Eating more protein being dehydrated or fighting an illness as simple as a cold can affect it all.

Did the doctors say anything? I'm guessing you don't have a renal consultant as your function hasn't pit you in stage 4 and in the UK that is when you tend to get a consultant

Try not to worry, ask to have another blood test and then go from there. I know it's hard but try not to worry. Hoping it's just a blip and nothing more.

I have to call tomorrow to get in to the nephrologist. Renal ultrasound scheduled for this Friday. And yes, I’ve been on the tail end of a cold. My doctor did repeat the test, at a different lab. The results were 33 at one lab and 28 at another. My doctor thinks some of the medications I’m on could be causing this problem, but I’ll know more soon. Thank you for your information

Your visit with Nephrologist makes good sense. Stay positive and start thinking about potential options for therapies. Try to get a firm diagnosis on what is causing your kidney issues. Keep us informed we love to help.

Time for a repeat test.

Thanks, Have had two tests done a week apart at two different labs one was 33 the other was 28, so I don’t think it’s a lab error.

Get a second test. Assuming it's not a fluke, your nephrologist might suggest a kidney biopsy. If so, have one done as that will give you a lot more information, and from there you can take further action such as modifying your diet.

I don’t have a nephrologist yet, I’m supposed to call tomorrow to get an appointment. Thank you for giving me this information as it will give me more to talk to him about

There are many factors as the other members have said. Make sure you have a renal panel lab draw done very soon. This way you can see if it was just a one time thing or there is other things going on. Make sure you have water before you have a lab draw and are hydrated but limit caffeine prior to the test.

Good luck.

As I mentioned in the other replies, it wasn’t a lab error. But I wasn’t hydrated when I went in to either of the tests. In both instances, at two different labs, other renal functions were elevated as well. I’ll know more after the renal ultrasound Friday and the nephrology appointment. Thank you for taking the time to answer

I agree with Kbressler…...time for a repeat blood test. My nephrologist would say that it could be lab error. Need to look at other things other than eGFR. Remember this is just an estimate of how well your kidneys are filtering

Thank you. This is all very encouraging.

My GFR changes with diet and weight gain. When I eat the wrong foods my kidneys let me know. My doctor gave me a prescription for Sodium Bicarbonate tabs 650mg 4 per day. This changed the pH of my blood and helped my kidneys. My GFR went up. Also the proper amount of drinking water is important. Check with your doctor and ask questions.

Thank you. I will be seeing the doctor in two weeks and will be asking lots of questions!
