Hello, I am new to the group and look forward to any advice, making friends etc I have stage 4 kidney disease. I had renal cancer and they had to take 1/2 of each kidney. Most importantly, I’d like good tips, I can read everywhere what NOT to eat.. but not what to eat, or it’s very limited. Also just positive advice. I’m pretty down. Thank you in advance! Looking forward to getting to know you!

Hi Rubymom

Welcome to the group I hope you get all the support and help you are looking for.

Now I don't know a lot about kidney cancer so not sure if your having to do chemo and what restrictions you are on regarding that.

Kidney disease is different for everyone and that means restrictions are different too. I would suggest you ask to see a real dietician as they can look at your labs etc.

So I'm in stage 5 but was diagnosed in stage 4 so my restrictions have changed with time so please seek medical advise...

Cut sodium from you diet, don't drink dark soda e.g. cola, reduce dairy intake, limit red meats, whole wheat, potatoes and rice.

If you have high potassium then what fruit and veg high in that.

I swear by following the restriction and a health life style of going to a small walk 4 times a week. I was diagnosed with 20% renal function and 18years on I'm only just facing dialysis after Christmas. I was expected to start dialysis 2009 but got 8 more years and that's because of diet and medication so it can be done.

Whennim warm in stage 4 it was very important to stay well hydrated and was told to drink 3 to 4 litres a day which is very different to today where I am only on 550mls, again this is why you need a medical profession to help this.

Good luck and if you need any help or support just post we are all here for you wishing you the best

Hi Rubysmom,

Welcome to our wonderful site. We are so glad you are here. You have been through a lot and this community is here to support and comfort you. go

I am going to echo what was said by my fellow members. Dealing with kidney disease is very personal. Each of us has our own situation that benefits from different treatments. I would highly recommend that you see a renal dietician. They can tailor a specific diet plan according to your medical history including restrictions and liquid intake and drug interactions. Don't look at this as a negative thing because your diet is something you have total control over.

Becoming your own advocate and taking charge of your health is very empowering. Become as educated as you can by taking any classes in your area and doing research on the internet. Make sure you are comfortable with your health providers and are getting the answers you need. Learn about your labs and what they mean as well. That way you can be proactive in your healthcare.

There are thousands of us who are living the good life with kidney disease. We all understand how overwhelming it is. But there is a lot of true heroes here in this community who have fought the battle and are successful in their struggles.

Give yourself a big hug. Allow yourself to adjust to the new life you have. Please know we are here for you. Ask away or just chime in anytime. The best way to help yourself is to help others. So let us know about your journey and share what you learn along the way.

Hello and thanks for the reply! I have my next nephrologist appointment in December and at that point I’m seeing a dietitian. I love how positive you are! I definitely need some of that right now. I have been at stage three for years.. and just Monday was told I’m now in stage four, so I need to be much more vigilant! I would love to hear more of your story if you feel like sharing. Thank you again,

Christina
