Hi There, hazel-hearty. Welcome to the community! I am not a pharmacist or a doctor, but I've always heard that beta-blockers are used to treat high blood pressure. It could be that it is also used to lower your heart rate because medicines are often prescribed for multiple conditions. I wouldn't want to second-guess your healthcare provider. I'm a transplant patient, and I take four different pills to control my blood pressure. Like you, I am on the edge of Stage 5 CKD. My GFR was 14 in my last two tests. I have been hanging on without needing to go on dialysis. I hope you can avoid dialysis, but I should say it's not the end of the world if you do. Many people lead active, productive lives while they are on dialysis.
Hi hazel-hearty, I take propanolol ER for my blood pressure, beta blockers are used to lower blood pressure, they will also lower your heart rate as I was on metropolol another beta blocker due to rapid heart rate of unknown origin for many years. They worked pretty well for both, however I would have breakthrough episodes of SVT -supraventricular tachycardia. Eventually the episodes became so problamatic that I consulted with an electrophysiologist, and had two cardiac ablasions for SVT, cardiac flutter and atrial fibrillation. Anyway I am now off the metropolol and just on propanolol to control my blood pressure. Propanolol also helps with panic & anxiety just as a side note. It is no suprise that it lowers your blood pressure, it is doing what it was designed to do. If you have concerns, you should contact your Dr. I also wondered if they have told you the cause of your heart rhythm problem.
The cardiologist DX SVT and prescribed carvedilol but that seems to lower my BP and increase my HR. Plus he scheduled: a stress and echo test, a patch, and some other test for my heart. He says to get a better understanding of this inconvenience.
What is cardiac abrasion? Is it nonevadive?
A cardiac ablasion is a procedure where they use wires and go in through your groin and they map out the heart at the same time, they locate the the SVT or whatever the particular arrythimia is and they ablate it with intense heat like that from a microwave or intense cold. I have had two in the past several months to ablate SVT, atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. I was originally told I just had SVT by my cardiologist, then when I saw the electrophysiologist I found out it was much more and possibly life threatening. I now also take flecanaide an anti arrythmic drug and eliquis which prevents blood clots.
Hi again, my GFR is 21,so not where you are however I see my nephrologist every 3 months for PKD and sooner if anything comes up.
My GFR is 13. I see my nephrologist every 2 months. My heart rate has increased significantly in the last 2 years. The doctor had to take me off of blood pressure medicine which was prescribed for CKD, not for high blood pressure. On the medicine, I was blacking out because of low blood pressure. As for dialysis, I am not on it. I function ok without dialysis; I'm retired so I can stay home when I don't feel well.
I have not blacked out but I get weak. Now, I take barely warm shower
I am stage 5 PKD. My GFR is 11-13. I see my nephrologist about once a month. He checks to see if I still feel ok and to make sure that my lab work is still ok. Other than high sodium and phosphates and a problem with secondary hypothyroid disease, I am doing ok. I will put off dialysis until I am sick all the time and feel miserable. I will do the periteneal dialysis that I can do at home, and preferably do at night only. It only takes two weeks to be able to use once they put in the catheter.
