How is walking different from exercising?

In 2011, while in vacation in Egypt i was eating everyday like it was the last day of my life, literally i ate too much, and yet in 3 weeks i lost 5 kg, all due to walking from morning till late at night.

But a little while ago i struggled to lose weight while exercising daily, like I’d lose maybe 2 kg in a month while also not eating ... Why?

Hi SoniaGorgeous. You need to put fuel in to burn it off, which you did in Egypt. Then you came home, exercised and ate little and the weight loss was less. If you don't eat, you won't lose. Why not follow the NHS 12 week plan and use the BMI calculator? Find out how many calories you need and go from there.

Hello SoniaGorgeous, we often overlook the value of walking to our well-being because it's a natural and everyday activity. When doing some research for my local Long Distance Walker's Association I discovered some interesting facts. When we walk we submit our leg joints to one and a half times our body weight with each step. If you run, it's seven times your body weight! A fast walk (above 3-4 mph) will burn more calories than jogging.

If you factor in good companions and interesting surroundings then you are improving your mental health as well.

For an amusing take on the benefits of walking could I recommend this 9minute video. m.youtube.com/watch?v=aUaIn...

You said it yourself. You were exercising - what? - 12 hours a day. Start doing that again, and you will probably lose weight quicker.

You also may not have eaten quite as much as you think. While exercise normally increases appetite, for some endurance exercise suppresses it. If you were eating all you wanted, it may not have been as much as you would have had if you had taken taxis everywhere.

For those of us who aren't exercising all through the day, diet is far more important than exercise when it comes to weight loss. Focus on that, but keep doing the exercise, because it has many other benefits.
