Like a lot of things, calorie counting gets easier the more you do it to the point that you dont need to count as such because you become familiar with the foods which will help/ hinder you on your road to weight loss. Use the calorie guides to start with and it will soon become second nature :-) Also remember to load up on the calorie-low/free foods such as green veg. Good luck :-)

If you record everything you eat on one of the calorie counting websites, you should be able to learn how many calories are in foods over time. You should then be able to make better choices.

Try myfitnesspal (uk names and units etc) or fitday (American names and units) and there are several others.

good luck on your journey

Welcome, I hope you find what you need in this community. Start by dowloading an app on your phone to keep track of calories (Fat Secret, My Fitness Pal...), it's a great aid! Good luck!

Hi Jeff. One of the things I did when I first started was to work out the calories in the meals I regularly eat and the foods I like. You will probably find some meals are far more calorific than others. Most of us have routines when comes to cooking and eating so if you can adapt your usual meals, by maybe reducing the meat content or swapping meat for fish, you maybe surprised how many calories you can save. If you are a snacker (as many of us are) you may want to try swapping some higher calories snacks for lower ones. I keep and number of handy snacks available from 10 calorie jellies to 80 calorie weightwatchers Jaffa mini rolls. It makes it easier to stay focused if you don't feel like you are depriving yourself too much. Good luck!

Hello jeffchap, counting calories seems a bit difficult, I know. :) Have you tried some of the free apps on the GooglePlay? I've tried 3 in the past and found the best one to be MyFitnessPal - it has a huge database, you can add your own food to the database and, what I found very good, it is aimed at the U.K. food market, which is a big plus.

Good luck on your journey!

Or... don't count calories. You probably know that fish and chips is not as healthy as a veg soup. Have full veg soup and only half fish and chips. If you tend to have two bad meals a day, either serve them on a small plate, or when the meal arrives, draw a line through the middle and only eat one half.

Another approach to dieting which does not require counting calories is the intermittent fasting diet (5:2 is mentioned here a lot as a successful approach). Or possibly realmealrevolution.com/the-... which also does not require (even discourages) calorie counting

the advantage of the first approach is that you can still eat fish and chips, the last approach has banned foods, so you'd have to stop eating some of the things you may like.

Thank's for that advice.
