I'm literally starting today and need to lose about 8 stone which is shocking!

Would love to hear from anyone who is or was in the same boat. Thanks.

Good morning, you are so in the right place as many of us here have similar stories. Very briefly, I started out at 18st 4.5lbs. Today, four months later, I have lost 3.5 stone, Purely by calorie counting, exercise and support from this great forum. I would say that you have to be committed and really want to lose weight because a half hearted attempt just won't take you to where you want to be! I don't have an ideal weight at this moment in time, I just take small achievable steps and the result of those makes me feel so good. To start my goals was to get down into the 17 stone mark, then to 17st 11lbs (half a stone loss) and then to 17st 4.5lbs, so on and so forth. Today I can report that I am now into the 14 stone mark, I have gone down from a size 24 into an 18 and I feel so good and proud of myself for what I have done. My weight loss started because I saw a blouse that I fell in love in with and it was too small, if it didn't fit me then I could fit it! Bride to be suggests that you have a far greater reason than a blouse to have as an initiative, so start today and don't look back, just look to us all here for our support and encouragement. Good luck, YOU CAN DO IT!

Dear Jacqui, do you know, I said exactly the same thing when I started out. "I wished it were me" and look, it is me and it WILL also be you. I am 5ft 4" so not too different eh! The diabetes is a small hurdle but it isn't a major problem. Your blood sugars will be high if you eat the wrong foods but you can bring them down with both diet and exercise. So, ideally, you need to look at a healthy diet not only for weight loss but for your diabetes. You need to exercise to help with your weight loss and also your diabetes. I don't know your regime for insulin, but I do know that if you taking insulin you can adjust the amount according to your blood sugar levels and this is something you need to feel confident with and need to talk over with your diabetic nurse and how she can help you manage your regime to fit in with your new lifestyle. If you don't get the answers you need, then go higher to your consultant, but don't give up, that will only make you feel miserable, but losing weight makes you feel so good and proud and healthy of course. There are quite a few people in this forum who have diabetes and who will help you along, all you have to do is be confident enough to ask questions. My heart is with you all the way and I know you WILL do it and be saying in a few weeks time "That was me" Go get it Jacqui X

Just a question. Are you doing the NHS 12 week weight loss programme? If so, what week are you on?

Good luck with the weight loss. The diabetes web site has some useful information on lowering your carbohydrates to hopefully help with losing weight.

Hi, I was 117kg, I've lost 8kg, I have another 35+ to lose. I am not diabetic, but found the low carb diet recommended on the BDA website really helpful. Look it up on dietdoctor, too. For me, cutting carbs has helped in two ways- it frees up a lot of calories to spend on other things; I stay full and don't crave/need to nibble at all. I am losing 1kg a week, and loving it! Do chat and ask questions if you want to know more.

It's been practically painless for me- and I have tried lots of diets before, believe me!

I think you need smaller goals as well as your big goal, what date is the wedding? Using the ap my fitness pal will see how many calories you are consuming. Roughly in very broad terms a deficit of 3,500 calories will be a pound off in weight. If it is early 2015 you may need to set a more realistic goal, good luck

Hi

i started needing to literally halve my body weight plus a bit. I'm over a stone lighter which may not sound much but being in a wheelchair and an electric tricky one at that when i leave home it shows that it can be started well and i hope finished eventually. Just set small targets a small weight loss maybe losing 6lb to get below the next stone marker, or being able to get a button done up on a jacket you still wear but can't as yet do up the button.

My targets are to get below 20st

to get into my monsoon jeans and be able to sit down!

To get below the weight limit for standard wheelchairs.

I'm not even considering anything larger than that till I get below all of those targets.

Incidentally losing 10 percent of your body weight is proven to have significant health benefits including reducing your blood pressure and type 2 diabetes risk.

Good luck, it's not a race, so just keep going, and learn enough to keep off whatever you lose forever

Oh and by the way remember your partner loves you and wants to marry you even with some extra weight, he'll love you if you stay the same, lose a bit, or lose loads because it's YOU he loves. A wedding isn't about that one day it's about all the days that follow. I wish you success but I hope you have all the luck in the world for your marriage.
