Go refferal

I have a really bad ingrowing toenail and it’s causing so much agony, I work within the operating theatres and have shown my toe to a consultant surgeon who has agreed it need removing. My only problem is I went last week to my gp and was seen by a nurse practitioner who said they don’t do refferals anymore to surgeons but has refereed me to a podiatrist, I received the letter on Saturday but the podiatrists are trainees and I don’t want to be treated by a student, and I have to wait till the end of April but I am in so much pain and the surgeon will see me sooner. Can I demand a refferal to the consultant?

Hello. Sorry but if your GP can not give you a referral than there is no other way around it. Unfortunately this is what we get for supporting a harmful failing organization. We have acted like cult members in NHS's support defying all logic, and now we are paying the price that usually cult members pay. I hope we can change it for the next generation..

As for you Scott. Find a local private GP. Usually charge between £50 and £100. They will refer you where ever you want. You will not have to pay to see a consultant as that will be through normal NHS. usally when Private GP's refer you, you get a quicker appointment as well.

Just do it, I promise it wont cost you more than £100. at least it will stop the pain. price worth paying for. If it doesn't work the way I said it does. I'll give you the £100.

Thanks for the reply but feel a little disappointed with your comment about the NHS. I work within the nhs and I think we do a bloody good job within the hospital theatres. One of the consultant surgeons is more than happy to sort out my toe but because my gp says he cannot reffer me direct I have to go through a podiatry consultation. I went back to the gp today who has said now it’s infected he will try to get an appointment with the podiatrist sooner than I have now. I’ve been given a course of antibiotics and strong painkillers.

:) I am sorry you are disappointed by my response. Although not a surprise, as I did say we have a cult mentality. And lets face it, the only reason you have access to a consultant is because you work around him. Most us would have no chance and end up suffering needlessly. Good luck I do hope you feel better soon.

Most people working in any organisation think what they do and who they do it for is on the right side. It would be too depressing to think of ourselves as being on the wrong side.

Oh my god am I reading your response in the right way??? Your response appears to be bashing the nhs and for the work that we all do towards LOOKING AFTER PATIENTS. You come across like you have a dislike towards the nhs? Why is this?? Well as you put it the only way I got to see a consultant was because I work around him! For your information we were talking in passing and I showed him wasn’t like I had jumped the queue to have a consultation was it. Regardless what your dislike towards the nhs and all those who work there is we have a health service that other countries DONT have and admittedly there are those that abuse the service and not only those who live in this country but those who travel from other countries to use because it’s FREE.

I’m dumbfounded as to your final comments “ most people working in any organisation think what they do and who they do it for is on the right side. It would be too depressing to think of ourselves as being on the wrong side”. So you think treating people for illnesses and saving lives, giving people a better chance of survival and improving their way of life wrong?? Would you turn down treatment if you needed it??

I asked about a gp refferal I wasn’t expecting a bashing about the nhs and it’s services. I’m guessing the way you talk about going to see a PRIVATE gp you ONLY use private sector services? Where do you thing emergencies go when private patients who have had operations and care goes wrong??? NHS that’s where, I worked within the private sector for 10 and a half years so I do know what happens.

You can decline to be treated by a trainee, but I’m not entirely sure (on the NHS) that you can demand a consultant treat you. If you want to be seen sooner and by a particular consultant, pay them private. That said, nail removals aren’t particularly complex, maybe reconsider letting a trainee do the procedure? We all have to learn somehow!

I understand that but I’m not going to be any trainee’s Guinea pig

Trainees have to learn by practice which you are denying them, seems you are conflicted re the NHS.I spent my last 13 years employment in NHS management and saw it reorganised three times which cost millions in redundancies and early pension payments .

The NHS is a top down dysfunctional bureaucracy and needs to be changed to a different model of care. There are plenty of examples . " Cult" is the wrong word but any attempt at changing the funding base will become a politicised cry of privatisation which is happening anyway by stealth. We think the NHS is the best system of health care in the world but it is not .Parts are excellent but there are almost daily examples of bad practice in the press.

The NHS is a top down bureaucratic nightmare of an organisation and the funding needs to be changed to a different model .There are plenty of examples but our politicians are frightened to change it as there will be an outcry. After all our NHS is the "best in the world "except it is not.

Treepie I’ve worked in the nhs for 21 years and have seen the changes and the wasted money spent on management and admin who do sod all but sit in there office pressing a few keys and chatting on the phone. One of the answers to the under pressure nhs is to get rid of the paper pushers and the dead weight of people within made up jobs and put more into clinical areas. As I said I’m not letting any trainee/student play around with my toe if they want to practice then do it on a pigs trotter but not my toe.
