Good news re travel for the disabled.

They say bad news travels fast so here is some good news about travel. I applied for a disabled person's railcard (UK) last week. I downloaded a simple form written in plain English (1 side A4) & posted it with evidence of my allowances. The following day there was a status report online & the next day it arrived in the post!! Full marks to National Rail. For those who don't know this entitles the cardholder & one other person traveling with them to a third off most rail travel.

Sounds good to me, thank you.

I have a disabled free bus pass for Merseyside and in case we go further I shall apply for one of those too lol.

I would very much welcome a card to say I'm disabled So that for example if I drive somewhere and forget my blue badge I've got proof of being disabled. It would help when booking tickets as well.

If anyone who reads this is of similar can we start a campaign for disabled cards?

There probably is somewhere we can start a campaign for a disabled card. I have a blue badge, rail card and passport to leisure . But this is not enough on occasions and as this post shows everywhere has different rules. I find British rail is always prompt with rail card acknowledgement and dispatch and on a large fare you can soon save the cost of the initial card. I buy a three year one which works out the cheapest. But as a disabled pensioner I would applaud any card to recognise disability, wish there had been one when I was working disabled, but on the other hand some people would probably not like to be defined on a card as disabled.

katieoxo, why not make the card available by default so those who don't want it can tick that box when notice of eligibility is issued?

That sounds like a good idea to me Honeycombe 3, but first we have to get disability national cards issued by which ever government department.

I live in fife, Scotland and have a consession card issued by the council. It entitles me to cheap rail and bus travel within Fife and also the National Rail card mentioned above. You have to pay £20 for the rail card. My card can also be used wherever it states 'concessionary prices' eg theatre, cinema etc. Hope that helps a bit xx

That sounds good to me the card in Scotland, shame other areas don't have the same system in place. But thanks for the info sounds like a good idea for a national pass for less abled

i think we need a national push for an accredited disabled card that give you and your helper disabled access and reduces the number of cards ect you have to carry if this card were recognized by all then it would be a god send #
