Do I need a full bladder for the 20 week scan?

I remember having to drink 2 pints before having the 12 week scan so that my bladder was full, is it the same for the 20 week scan? I have mine a week on Monday but completely forgot to ask the midwife if I needed a full bladder again. Any help with this is appreciated as it saves me bothering the midwife, thank you.

They told me I didn’t t need a full bladder. I’d had a drink before mine ( was on Wednesday) and had to empty my bladder half way through.

No you don’t. Good luck x

I think that if you were told during your 12th week most likely will apply to your 20th week. I had to drink 32 ounces of water and half way through the exam I had to empty my bladder.

Hi. I had to have a full bladder for my 20 week scan. They said it's so they can see all the organs etc close up. I'd go with a full bladder and then ask the sonographer when you get there as often they might ask you to go to the toilet if the baby is in a difficult position or something as I've read the other replies and I remember a lady in the hospital when I was there having to go the toilet and they go back into her scan :)

Not for the 20 week scan. Having a full bladder can make it more difficult for them to get the measurements they need & they may make you go for a wee during the scan anyway! Xx

Hiya,

I was told to drink 1 litre of water 1 hour before my appointment. They carryout a check of the wall lining to your bladder x

If it s 20 week scan they don't look at your bladder, and baby will be big enough to be seen without a full bladder, so no need to drink loads.. It's a scan to look at babys anatomy and make sure all the bits look right as well as look at the position of your placenta.
