suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and being pregnant

Hi

I finally got diagnosed about 2 years ago with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (or ME), and they reckon I've proberly had it for at least 11 years if not longer.

I've just found out I'm 5 weeks pregnant, (which I am thrilled about) but now I'm petrified about the pregnancy, labour and the effect it will have on the CFS.

I don't want to let the little one down.

I have an amazing husband who works full time (and shifts), does all the housework, cooking, food shopping, basically everything for me and never complains whilst I do manage to work part time but then pretty much wiped out. I don't want to burden him anymore esspically with my worries and I can't get to see my GP for another 2 weeks.

I know I have a while to go before labour and living with a new born but has anyone got any experience or advice with how they coped?

Thank you

Hi congratulations! And welcome to the forum :-)

I don't have personal experience but a close friends mum has had ME for years - she was diagnosed when my friend was a teen, so I do have some understanding of what a debilitating illness it is so I think you're so brave to make this next step :-)

Do you receive any sort of disability benefit? My first instinct would be to check out if you will be entitled to any state-funded assistance such as a part-time carer to help you with childcare? (I might be way off - just an idea!)

It sounds like your husband is a gem, be honest and tell him you're worried about coping with cfs and a newborn, he's probably feeling the same! By putting your heads together you're much more likely to come to a solution.

Do you have mums/sisters/friends who would we willing to really help out in those early days? It is tiring being a mum so teamed with cfs there's no doubt that it will be challenging for you but with a support system in place and the most positive attitude I'm sure you'll make a great mum - no more of this "letting the little one down" nonsense!

I hope that somebody else can provide some more practical advice than me - I just wanted to pat you on the back really! Check out some of the ME charity pages, they're bound to have words of wisdom for you.

Good luck, keep strong, I'm sure you're gonna do a great job x

Congratulations on your pregnancy news. When you have your first app with the midwife at around 8 weeks you need to discuss it with her and she may be able to point you in the right direction with the after care that you may require and also during pregnancy she may want to see you more for appointments etc. The most important thing is to be honest with your husband about your worries and talk to each other, you wont be letting your little one or anyone down, it is exhausting in the first few weeks with a new born but together you will do it. If anyone offers help mum/sister/friend take them up on it and don't feel like you are failing for asking for help, I wish when I had my first I had excepted help instead of being to stubbern and struggling on my own.

Hi, I am 39 weeks with my 2nd child, I have a 3 year old also. I got diagnosed with cfs in Dec after suffering quite badly for two years.

I became really depressed in the first few months worrying how I will cope with a new baby and a lively daughter. But I went to see a nutritionist and after about 6 weeks I could walk, See straight and now I feel so much better and am looking forward to our new arrival. Which will hopefully be any day now.

You will be fine and will cope, it is tiring but it is so worth it! Good luck, and also there is some talk to say that some woman's cfs disappears once they have a baby. Fingers crossed.
