Book Club anyone??

Kit10 profile image
42 Replies

There's been several mentions of book clubs on the "Potted Plant Syndrome" thread. Would anyone be interested in a book club here? If we picked books that are available as audiobooks on YouTube no-one would have to read so it would be accessible to anyone with eyesight issues, and we are all online...

Just a suggestion.

I totally interested! I however need to read it to comprehend it better. So pick books that have both 🙂

Yes and no. I'd be willing to review books that I've read, but I have very odd tastes, and most people have never even heard of the ones I like. Book discussions might appeal to me, but I wouldn't do a book club. I think it's a great idea, though!

now you have me curious!! What do you read?

NorasMom profile image
NorasMom in reply toStacyHayward

Oh, sure. Put me on the spot! 😆 I probably should have just said that I'm picky. Dorothy Gilman, Aaron Elkins, Janice Holt Giles, Jean Webster. I still read some of the Little House books, The Borrowers, the Hatchet series. I love Alcott's "Old Fashioned Girl" but hate Little Women. I collect a few series from the early 20th-century -- Ruth Fielding, Grace Harlowe, The Outdoor Girls, the original Nancy Drew and Judy Bolton. I like some Karen Rose, the Clan of the Cave Bear series, Jan Karon. Louis L'Amour's my comfort fiction. For nonfiction, I lean towards modern history. I'm currently working on the history of Russia, Daniel Boone, and Valley Forge.

Have you ever read any of James Michener books?

yes, and we love them. Audio books in the car. Little expensive at $5 per gallon in our SUV :-)

James Michener novels are my all time favorites, Royce. All of them!

I've never tried him, probably because Mum reads them. 😀

That's 4 so far. It might be possible.

Would people be interested in:

Books about MS, or fiction with characters that have MS?

Fiction only - if so any preferences or no-nos? e.g. do you love thrillers? No murder mysteries?

Non-fiction? If so any favourite subjects?

What about biographies/autobiographies?

Mixture of all sorts?

Any suggestions? Books you've always meant to read but never quite got round to?

I'd be up for a mixture of all sorts, as long as they're easily available.

availability and cost are things to consider. I personally like fiction. I like to get away 🙂. I have recently read a whole lot online about ms, so I’m a little burnt out on that subject. Lol. I like to read to escape.

I hope to “escape” because dealing with this narcissistic soon to be x is more than hard, I’m trying to not get too worked up so as to not exacerbate the ms and I am trying to be strong for my daughter! My goodness! A book club would distract me from life for a little That and animals 🙂. Sorry everyone I love them all like they were my babies!

I agree with what Norasmom wrote. It is a good idea but I doubt anything on my "to read" list would be of interest to anyone.

oddly, the only reason I’ve stick with my book club is it encourages me to read outside my interests. I’ve found some great books I’d never try alone.

In that case, my existing book club is called "Mum". 🤣 She's also failed at it badly. I think in 58 years she's gotten me to read 3 books that she liked.

May I recommend Cushing's handbook: A compilation of papers concerning glazes, glaze calculation & formulation, clay bodies, raw materials with clay body, slip and ... making tips and other useful information

You might have to look further.😃

I'm in! I'm not into sci-fi but I've read all kinds of things that I never thought I'd like when in a book club before Covid. Some I didn't like but some I never thought I would, I did! Sometimes it opens my eyes to other genres. I have a little book that I list the date, book and author when I finish a book. Last year I read 99 books!

falalalala profile image
falalalala in reply tomrsmike9

I wish I would've kept track of that & books purchased.

I checked out the same book from the library a bunch of times before I discovered that I actually owned a copy. MS did that.😂😂😂

NorasMom profile image
NorasMom in reply tofalalalala

I just finished a Nora Roberts that I absolutely hated, but the story seemed familiar. After I was done with it, I realized that I had a second copy sitting on my shelves. 🤪 They've both now gone to Goodwill.

I think all of her books have the same story!

NorasMom profile image
NorasMom in reply toAmore55

They do! And normally I don't mind, but this one wasn't even believable on a fantasy level. Cinderella is a real story. The Borrowers and Flower Fairies are real. Santa Claus comes every December. This book was not realistic at all. She owed millions in back taxes and paid it off in a few months in spite of not having a job... 🤨

At our last house I had my library in my basement. For a home library it was huge. All the books were sorted by genre and author alphabetized. When we downsized it ripped out my heart to get rid of a ton of my books. Some were taken by my kids but the majority went to a 2nd hand bookstore. I rarely purchase a book now as I remember the pain of having to let so many go.

I lost all mine in a bad divorce. I can forgive the 4-year custody battle, the destruction of his grandmother's china, the nuisance calls to CYS, but I will never forgive the loss of my books.

Have any of you tried Rosamund Pilcher books? Especially “The Shell Seekers “ and “Coming Home “, fantastic books. Cross generational, great reads and great discussion to have ( I read them many times and presented them to a book club, had wonderful discussions).

I’m in!! I don’t really read much sci-fi and horror is a no as is anything where animals are abused or killed. I can try most anything else. I really enjoy Diana Gabaldon and Phillipa Gregory or most any historical fiction.

NorasMom profile image
NorasMom in reply toKipAngCan

I have to be in the right mood for Diana Gabaldon, but I do have a number of her books. I just don't like gratuitous sex in my books. I prefer to use my imagination. I don't think I'm familiar with Phillipa Gregory, though.

KipAngCan profile image
KipAngCan in reply toNorasMom

I’m not really into the gratuitous sex either which is why I like Diana Gabaldon. If it does appear in her stories it’s usually between characters that are committed to each other and isn’t too graphic. Phillipa Gregory writes a lot of books based on Henry VIII and that time period. For a bit I was fascinated with that time.

I've been listening to audiobooks for many years but have a feeling that the books I read wouldn't be the ones others like to read. I do read some true crime accounts but otherwise tend to older (19th - early 20th century) fiction or sometimes biography.

A book club sounds interesting,   Kit10 . I love biographies, autobiographies, and any book with quilt patterns! :-D Do you remember when you had to do book reports in school? That might be another idea to perhaps add to this book club adventure.

Kit10 profile image
Kit10 in reply tocarolek572

In my school we didn't have to write book reports, maybe it's a UK/US education difference.

However, It's an interesting idea.

I am currently listening to "The Girl on the Train" by Paula Hawkins, audiobook at:

youtube.com/watch?v=eDZ_4y3...

It's not my usual taste but it was very popular a few years ago and I thought I really ought to read it to find out what all the fuss was about. I could write a report on it when I've finished it.

It's probably impossible to write book reports that don't include spoilers. I'll put a spoiler alert on anything I write, just in case. In case anyone is concerned, TRIGGER WARNING it includes references to alcoholism and death - not sure yet whether murder is involved or not - and possibly domestic abuse.

Maybe someone could do a report on something a bit more cheerful! I agree that we probably all need escapism.

p.s. that youtube audiobook, despite what it says, is abridged (compared to the sample on Amazon)

I am interested. Problem is - I work full time, and by the end of the work day, I am out of spoons and too exhausted to do much of anything. I am in the middle of "Five Presidents" by Clint Hill. But I started it a year ago! Maybe I could listen as I drive to and from work. 'Course, after thinking about it, OUR U.K. folks would (understandably) not be interested in our Presidents.
