I enjoy reading books. as soon as I'm done with one I'm looking for my next. Fiction is my genre , maybe it's the escape from reality that's appealing . My question is, what is your favorite book and maybe a short why. Lets all escape from our MS for a while.

Game of Thrones series, Witch, I don’t read much fiction these days...

I find it harder to read now, due to concentration issues, but I've always loved the classics. Dickens is probably my favorite author, but Trollope is good, Austen (of course), Twain, Jerome Jerome, etc. I love the humor and dry wit of the English authors.

You enjoy what I call the" chewy " stuff. I read "Anna Karenina" this year and I have to admit that it was one of the most enjoyable books I ever read .Although , a little long it has many layers and intersecting plots. I'm sorry to hear of your troubles with reading . Perhaps some audio books would fill the void.

My sister pointed out that I amassed a treasure by reading so much for many years and reading such good, memorable literature. True!

I love reading although I never liked being told to read by teachers. So, I missed out on a lot of the classics when I was young. I discovered how much I love Dickens just this past year! Great Expectations... Tale of Two Cities...oh my gosh, how I loved them! And Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice... same with that. Oh, and I’ve always loved the movies based on A Christmas Carol but never read it until last Christmas! I discovered how much I’d been missing!

Frankenstein ,believe it or not is a much better book than any of the movies. If you havn't read it .

I have not. My son had said the same thing and I forgot. I need to read that! Thank you.

Dickens was such a marvelous story teller! His characters were so rich, even the minor ones. The only movie version of "A Christmas Carol" I really like is the 1951 Alistair Sim version. I've hardly ever seen a movie that did justice to the original book, but "It's a Wonderful Life" movie was actually much better that the original story, I thought, because it developed the characters and story much better. Frank Capra was a marvelous movie maker.

My youngest son can’t stand any “A Christmas Carol” movies with the exception of Mickey’s Christmas Carol! He’s not a kid, either. He would always leave the room when he still lived at home and we’d watch one.

Some of the schools I went to had reading programs that encouraged reading. You had to keep a log of all the books you read and the date you finished reading it. A parent or guardian had to sign off on it verifying that you read it. Some teachers would have you write a summary or a critique of the books for extra credit points. The students who read the most books got some kind of prize at the end of the year. Usually some kind of gift certificate donated by a local business.

Tinker-Belle in reply toPeruzzot

My kids had that! Good memories. I think it was part of an accelerated reading program here.

Same here! When I bought my Kindle years ago, that made it so much easier to read and I enjoyed it. Over the last couple of years, I can't concentrate on what I'm reading...no matter what it is so I have stopped reading. As someone mentioned, I may have to look into getting audio books for my Kindle.

The stand was gifted to me about a year ago. When I started reading it I had to laugh at irony of it all.

Stephen King was my favorite author when I was young. I’ve grown into more of a wimp as I’ve gotten older. He’d probably give me nightmares now. Very few people can pull you into a story as well as Stephen King!

I love James Michener, any and all by him. Have read every piece written by him. And so many other authors I could spend all day listing them! Just love to read! Recently read “Insipid” a history of Winston Churchill. It was excellent for anyone who enjoys history.

I've been rereading Ray Bradbury, and just finished Good Lord Bird on my Kindle. I also enjoyed Hillary Mantel's Wolf Hall, and Bring up the Bodies. But I read more non fiction than fiction at this point. I don't have the concentration I once took for granted. Every thing takes longer.

Tinker-Belle profile image

That’s me...I haven’t had the concentration lately. I read much more non fiction now.

Mitch Albom

Everything he writes is GREAT 👍

Mitch Albom is great. I think he’s one of the few authors I’ve gotten my non reading husband to read. He (and I) loved Tuesdays with Morrie, especially.

I could no more choose a favorite book than a favorite child. I love the classics (Jane Austen, Dickens, the Brontes, Poe, Trollope, Homer, Gaskell), fantasy/SciFi (Heinlein, Herbert, Tolkien, Martin, McCaffrey, Scott-Card, Harry Potter), mysteries (Christie, Graham, Francis), field guides, history, biography, science, cross stitch magazines, and a lot of children's books. I was a very early reader. By the time I entered first grade I had read so many of the British classics that my teacher had to teach me to spell in American English. I always have a stack of books waiting.

Tinker-Belle profile image

You took those words right out of my mouth! I agree. And children’s books are wonderful, too. I will never part with those unless one of my children wants some for their children.

Oh my, yes! Better yet, I make them come to my house for Nana's storybook time. :) I still have my original sets of Nancy Drew, Boxcar Children, and the Three Investigators.

Tinker-Belle profile image
Tinker-Belle in reply tocindyrn68

Exactly! Notice I said some not all... I loved Nancy Drew when I was little and my youngest loved Boxcar Children. They all loved Sandra Boynton’s cardboard books when they were really little...so cute and clever. Junie B Jones always made me laugh, too, although my step daughter wasn’t sure if she was the best influence on her kids! 😂

Hahahaha! I bet! Junie B. is a little rascal! My niece adores her. I've fallen in love with the Llama Llama books. The illustrator puts the best expressions on his face!

I have at least 30 books in various formats waiting to be read. I have an app on my phone called Good Reads. It helps keep track of all the books I've read, reading, and want to read. My want to read list grows much faster than my done reading list.😂🤣😂🤣

I remember in middle school we had to write down and list the books we read throughout the school year. I read more than anyone in the entire school. You can tell I was needing escapism even back them. Several years ago I started listing in a little notebook the dates finished, name of the book and author each time I finished one. I was curious how many I read in a year. Every year I have read more than the year before. I believe this year I will pass last year. That will put me at over 90 books read this year. I've always said, some people drink, some do drugs, I read. That's how I escape.

cindyrn68 profile image
cindyrn68 in reply tomrsmike9

I hear you. I read and cross-stitch and snuggle with the kitties.

Peruzzot profile image
Peruzzot in reply tomrsmike9

I keep a log book too. I started doing that when a supervisor wanted me to list out by title and author all the books I read for professional development rather than just saying read X amount of books. I wish I had started that log book years before. I think it would be mind boggling the amount of books I've read over the years.

mrsmike9 profile image
mrsmike9 in reply toPeruzzot

Me, too! I am such a bibliophile! I worked two jobs many years ago. One was in a bookstore where I was part time. We were sent tons of Advanced Reader's. I worked with a bunch of college age and slightly above aged people. They didn't like the kinds of books I read, plus they didn't have kids. So I would bring tons of free books home. I'm still working through the last of them!

I love to read although these days migraines and lack of concentration can hamper that sometimes. I think I have read every genre with the exception of science fiction. At least I don’t remember reading any. Lately I’ve been reading non fiction. I just finished a book by Kevin DeYoung and am currently reading J I Packer. I love his books. More recent fiction authors I really enjoy are Wendell Berry and Marilynne Robinson. I’ve also enjoyed David Baldacci and Harlen Coben. Maeve Binchy is good. Pat Conroy and Dorthea Frank are awesome. I can go on and on. Corrie Ten Boom’s The Hiding Place, which is based on a true story, is amazing... I also try to start each day by reading God’s word.

I read mostly non fiction. But like mystery and historical fiction as well. It's not unusual for me to have as many as 20 books going at the same time. I have them scattered throughout the apartment, on my phone, and in my bag that I take with me to appointments and the laundry mat to read while I wait.

I told my neurologist, when my eye wasn't looking through the viewfinder of a camera, both of them were riveted on the pages of a book. But what I mostly read would probably bore the snot out of most people. I'm a history geek with a specialty in historic natural disasters. I did read fiction from time to time. Really liked Kirk Mitchell's Emmet Parker mysteries. Being a New Mexican, I think it is law you have to read Tony Hillerman's mysteries. But my best friend introduced me to Kirk Mitchell's "Cry Dance", and Mitchell was blowing Hillerman away! I then practically inhaled every book in the series!

My favorite books lately are textbooks on ceramic glaze formulation.

Why? Because they are filled with excitement & intrigue! :D

As for other books, I like psychology and biographies.

I recently gave my niece a copy of Aesop's Fables to read to her baby.

I loved that book as a child. :)

What a great post! I am an avid Reader and I enjoy pretty much everything. I especially enjoy books that have a twist. I just finished reading the Devil and the dark water by Stuart Turton. It’s Agatha Christie meets Sherlock Holmes meets Pirates of the Caribbean. You should check out the website goodreads.com. You can keep track of the books you read as well as get reviews and suggestions.

I too check out books at goodreads before I read or buy. Seems their ratings are a little more accurate than the sights that sell. Your recommendation sounds good,I'll check it out. thanks
