If I'm not mistaken, I found 3 trout lilies in the woods this morning! I don't think I've ever seen a real one before. They apparently don't bloom until they're 4-7 years old, and after a few short weeks they just completely disappear until next Spring. The photo's not that great, but all I had with me was my Tracfone.

So happy today!
Signs of Spring! Very nice!
Lovely! I've been planting native wildflowers here in my woods. So far, I have seen only the spring beauties bloom. I have more bareroot plants to put in the ground, but it's been so hot this week (with no rain in the forecast), that I'm holding off. Plus when I was putting in several small dogwoods, I managed to pick up some ticks. These as usual attached in places difficult to reach without great effort (and diligence). Enjoy your woods rambles and happy discoveries!
That was my intention when I got this place. I was going to have several paths with seating areas surrounded by native flowers...and then my health deteriorated rapidly and no one else was interested in helping out. The only existing path to the creek has become inaccessible due to downed trees, and after several years I've had enough. I WILL find a way around them, even though the mower is only going a foot or two at a time before I have to stop and clear brush. 😩🤪
That's cool!
Yes, you did! They were everywhere when I was growing up. Beautiful little flowers. You may find they grow into a nice sized colony in a few years. Enjoy!
Mum came for coffee this morning, and we decided to go into the woods. Not an easy feat, considering the wheelchair couldn't go too far and then there were tree trunks to climb over. But we found umpteen large patches of the trout lilies along with an enormous carpet of pink Spring Beauties! Silly me didn't take the camera. Now I think I need to crawl in bed for a while. 😒
How wonderful! I grew up playing in the NC woodlands, had a Daddy and a Grandmother who knew the answers to every question I ever had about plants, flowers or trees. They inspired me to get my Master Gardener certification ( many years later) in Florida and then later in North Carolina, when I returned to my home state. There are many days, when I lose words, names (including my own) . I will almost always remember the name of a flower or plant, although it may be the Latin name, and I will have no memory of the common name, which most people find useless information...
I have never heard of a "trout lily" and wouldn't know if it bit me! It's wonderful that you know these things and can spot them!
that is a pretty pic thanks
I live in the east but don't think I've ever seen one thank you
