As SPMS tends to do as time went on my disability increased. Directly linked to the increase in disability was an increase with my depression. On top of this my right knee got worse and worse. I finally went to an Orthopedic surgeon and had it looked and much to my dismay I discovered my worst fears came true. Much like my right shoulder the continual falls that MS heaped upon me my worst fear came true. My knee needed to be replaced.
Throughout my depression and problems oftentimes Jess was the only thing that kept me going. We stayed close in touch and usually talk to each other once or twice a week just to be there and support each other. You all need a best friend like I've got in Jes.
The knee came to a head this past summer. I put off thinking about it for a month or so and then scheduled the surgery for the end of August. We went to Atlanta to visit our daughter the weekend before my surgery. And don't you know that on Saturday my family had to rush me to the hospital. As we sat around the kitchen table talking as we finished breakfast. The last coherent thought I had was that I threw up my breakfast and that was it. The family said I was thrashing as in pain and I was speaking incoherent thoughts that rambled on one on top of the others, kind of speaking out of my head . It turns out that I had 2 kidney stones, a UTI, a fever of a 104, a partially collapsed lung, and I had gone septic. They put me in the ICU for 2 days And I wasn't really right in the head until almost day 2. I later found out that I was basically at death 's door and it was lucky that with my MS that I was able to come out of Illness. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital until the blood infection was completely gone. Then I went straight to rehab and spend another 2 weeks in rehab. That Severe of illness set my MS over the Edge and I lay flat on my back for about 3 weeks. I'm still in the process of recovering but in 2 weeks when Thanksgiving comes around I plan to go to my brother-in-law's house using my Walker instead of being in a Wheelchair. That is my goal and I mean to make it happen.
I've been walking a everyday in some parallel bars my oldest son made for me and been working on strengthening my arms and legs with exercises. Then in about a month to 5 weeks I plan to go ahead and have my knee surgery done. If I beat the septic infection the knee should be a lot easier overall. And if I can do the knee before the end of the year it will save me about $5000 because my deductible has already been met for the year due to the illness I had in Atlanta. Call me crazy and I'll completely agree with you but if it wasn't for my spirit and hardheadedness I'd be dead right now. I have no plan to g anywhere for many many years, no matter what MS throws at me. What I do plan is to have a knee that works again without being painful. If I can get the knee back it will improve my gate and my walking. And once that is conquered I can get on the back of a horse and ride. That is my goal and I mean to make it happen! Does anyone here doubt me.....😷🤨😉😄
What I hope everyone takes away from this post is to set yourself goals. Then let nothing stand in your way while you work toward achievachievìng your goals! No matter how far fetch they seem! Rember, oftentimes our own worst enemy is ourselves. If you dream it and work hard to achieve it you can do it!

Hey Fan, ❣️so glad you came out of that horrible situation better than you went in and welcome back! I like the idea of setting goals that might be out of reach for now but not impossible in the future. My goal is to live independently and not worry so much about being able to afford it. thanks ❗

I loved reading your post. Even though you I've been through so much you keep persevering. You are an inspiration! I am sorry to hear that you had to go through so much. That was some serious illnesses that you had to deal with. So glad to hear that your improving and doing better. I believe also that you will be back in the saddle again. 💕
Welcome back! You are an inspiration to us all...I love your attitude, and your achievements. for they do go together, as you know. I am so sorry that you had to go through so much, but I am so glad that you dealt with all the issues and that you are improving and feeling better. Get that knee fixed and healed up and you will be good as new! MS is a weird disease at it's best, and we never know what it will do to us next, but I have NO doubt that you will be on a walker at your brother in law's house for Thanksgiving, and on horseback as soon as your knee heals! You can and will reach any goal you set for yourself, because you want it, and you are willing to work for it! Congratulations, Fancy, and it is so good to hear from you!

A lady at my church had a knee replacement a week ago and 3 days later came to church using only a cane! I have heard that knee replacements really help and aren't difficult to heal from, so I really wish that for you.
Thank you MrsMike9. I thought I was being careful. I had no clue that I was brewing such a toxic infection inside of me. I also wish for me that I'm backup on my feet a week after it's done but I'll settle for 3 to 4 weeks after it's done as long as I get up on my feet again without the pain and the extremely unstable knee! Wow! What an experience! Glad you are on the road to recovery. It seems that one common thing with MS is that we all try to find ways of doing things that we did in the past but need to adjust to our disabilities. Sometimes it requires planning all of our moves before starting, and taking things slowly.
WOW! What a ride you have been on. So glad you are doing better and that you are still planning to have your surgery. I sure hope that you will get to meet your goal of riding a horse! Keep up the good work!

I don't want to underestimate the knee replacement surgery because I know it's going to be tough but I kind of agree with you kcymary If I can come through the illness that I have like I did the knee should be somewhat of a cake walk! Fancy59.
I know several people who have had knee replacements they all did great remember to do your therapy! that is a must & you'll do great ... a Thought DON'T DO BOTH TOGETHER!! I had a friend who did even when we tried to talk her out of it. She did survive & is doing great now several years later. lol at the memory!

hi there!! So glad you came through all that horrible experience in Atlanta. That was a miracle. Most people don’t survive sepsis. I have often wondered if you were okay but lost your phone number. I still have a photo of you sitting on your beautiful horse. I know you will make it back there! What a motivation, a dream. Yes- if your mind can conceive it, and your heart believes it, your body will achieve it!
