G'Day, beloved ms family, I am sorry I thought this phrase was common. I guess it might be culturally specific. I have always understood it to mean, to deeply think about yourself. Have deep thoughts about a problem or situation that "YOU" are in. Really give something a lot of time and thought.

It's not exactly a complimentary expression - "contemplating one's navel" is just another way of saying "navel gazing", and that expression is generally used for someone who is overly absorbed with themselves and their own importance in the wider scheme of things i.e. "It carries the connotation of narcissism, practiced by self-absorbed people."grammarist.com/idiom/navel-...
