MS I HATE You

Christina Applegate’s MS announcement saddened me this morning. My 23 year old daughter has said on more than one occasion “mom I think I have MS” she has vertigo at times and feels unsteady on her feet. I smile positively and say talk to your doctor if you are really worried. I hate this f’ing disease it’s cruel and confusing. I’m so pissed sometimes I wonder is it really worth it. I’m struggling with my job not sure if it cognition issue or good ole depression. Either way will work really care. Sorry really bad day today I will post a butterfly tomorrow promise.

This is the place to vent. I’m sorry it’s a rough day. Hope tomorrow is better, but we understand about all the bad days.

it is okay to vent we all have done it a many times and will again ...talk to your work and maybe they can help you do a different job or make the one you have easier ...lots do work with people to help ...take care and go to the doctor with your daughter and both can discuss different parts and things about the disease together which will help both of you ...good luck and do relax and you can get the help you need also ...love and much happiness ...laugh and smile ...wonderful ways to help you forget for a second about this ...monster is what i call it and you can call it what ever makes it disappear for a while ...ahhahha...

I hear you, NanaCC . Good to vent. Just power on through, as always--you will be ok.

As to your employment, at this point you are entitled to 12 workweeks of unpaid medical leave during either the calendar year or during the FMLA period (if your employer uses the rolling method of leave calculation), so long as your employer employs over 50 employees for at least 20 workweeks, or 75 employees within 50 miles of your worksite, during the current or previous year. If your employer meets these criteria, in order to be eligible for FMLA leave, you must have worked at least 1250 hours and been employed for a minimum of 12 months. If you have a serious illness, you are entitled to take up to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during the FMLA period, and they can be consecutive or intermittent. You are required to give notice to your employer (usually within 30 days before you take the leave, if possible and there are many time requirements for notifications and responses between you and your employer, and there have also been some amendments to the Family and Medical Leave Act since I retired from law practice, so you should contact your employer's HR department and the US Department of Labor.

Also, the Americans with Disabilities Act gives you certain rights, such as to a reasonable job accommodation if it is necessary to help you perform the essential functions of your job and doesn't cause your employer an undue hardship to provide. Again, the employer must employ 20 or more employers within the current or previous calendar year to be covered by this statute. And again there are required notices and responses and prescribed times within which these are to be given.

I was a labor and employment lawyer before I retired from practice in 2013 (because of, as you put it, this f'ing disease) so I am no longer eligible to practice, so everything that I have said here is not legal advice, but only what I can recall from my education, training and experience. And I haven't had anything to do with this stuff in quite awhile so double check everything because some things may have changed, especially with the FMLA after COVID. And you can discuss the ADA as well with your HR Department and/or the DOL. Remember that you do have rights which may apply to your situation. Good luck 😊

Thank you all and yes I think it’s time I talk to HR I feel like I am stealing not giving them my best, I’ve been employed with them for 35 years, it’s a large company just afraid once I tell them about my issues it will label me unfavorably. I know it shouldn’t but I will always worry about that. I love AA Serenity prayer think I need to keep saying it and tell work hopefully this will help.

a couple of weeks back i couldn't tell if my depression was physiological, but in the end it didn't really matter... i had to get through it either way. i do think it was physiological, since it was accompanied by my returning ataxic gait and i remember from past times the two go together. i caught myself mentally adding up how much medication i had every night, thinking, 'will it be enough?'

i think part of the issue is the depression is temporary, but it FEELS permanent. i started cutting off the mental addition, reminding myself it was temporary and stopped pushing my cat away. my younger cat will awaken from a deep sleep if he hears me crying and come get right in my face, purring. i cuddled with him and it helped. reaching out helped. thanks for sharing with us and i hope you are able to resolve the work issues.

stay strong.

Talk to PCP when you get anxious or depressed. Some times it the MS or the results of having MS or both. Also talking to a therapist. We like to be supportive when you have difficult times, but your PCP or neurologist may have some insight. I had to take low dose of Zoloft to get my situation under control before it became a continual problem. Started with anxiety follow by depression. It’s gods to talk to someone on a regular basis to help keep those blues away. Praying you are getting better.

Prayers for you both. I can't express all the reasons I hate MS too. Then I remember to count my blessings.
