It might be a few things, Royce

For example, it could stand for

TN ~ Tennessee

TN ~ Trigeminal Neuralgia

depends on the context.

Why do you ask? :-D

a lady on here mentioned it and I was not sure, I thought Trigeminal Neuralgia was TMJ, I do not knw why, far to many ac ronyms in this disease ;-)

I wasn't sure, Royce. I do have TMJ but not TN. TN sounds like it might be TMJ but on steroids. No pun intend, Royce. Keep Smiling :-D

sounds like they are the same thing to me, I think it bears some more research

Trigeminal Neuralgia I had to google what it was

Shanna13 posted the question Trigeminal Neuralgia and MS overlap?

I googled it as well, rjoneslaw I don't know if TN and MS overlap. I am curious if anyone in this forum knows though... :-D

I recall someone saying they had similar pains but they didn't call it TN.

I could be wrong

The most recent post that I remember mentioned TMJ. Perhaps that was what you remember, rjoneslaw :-D

No this young lass said TN, I know what TMJ is. my friend and yours Trigeminal Nuralgia

carolek572 profile image

I know that you know, Royce, what TN is and what TMJ is, but I can see how the two are sometimes interchangeable when talking about them. That being said, I didn't know what TN was until I joined this forum, and I didn't even relate TN with TMJ. So much for my first sentence in this reply. I am curious about how TN might be a warning sign for 'ms'. I will do some research about that. What are your thoughts about TN being a warning sign for 'ms', Royce? Keep Smiling :-D

Hi! I got this short explanation from Mayo Clinic: " Trigeminal neuralgia can occur as a result of aging, or it can be related to multiple sclerosis or a similar disorder that damages the myelin sheath protecting certain nerves. Trigeminal neuralgia can also be caused by a tumor compressing the trigeminal nerve."

I have an acquaintance that has been dealing with it for a few years and it's apparently very painful. I don't think anyone knows how to ease or stop it yet. My friend has m.s. too. I think it's another symptom some have from the damage.

Like we need any more possible symptoms!

Tell your friend to look for a "Cyberknife" facility there is one in Arizona. Phoenix or Scottsdale. I believe they have others. If they find one and they are unsure tell them to contact the Arizona facility they have operated on my 3x so far and I hgigly recommend it.

Will do! Thanks so much!

Hi Royce, I am "bikeguy", my father had trigeminal neuralgia, and that is the only instance of any neurological condition anywhere in my extended family, until I was diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS in 2008, so don't know if there is a relationship but seems likely.

I too looked up trigeminal neuralgia. I have been dx w TMJ and my PT, acupuncturist & former chiropractor have treated for it. Upon description, it sounds kinda the same. I get a stabbing or shooting pain in my right jaw. Intensity and frequency change. The treatment helps ease it but it doesn’t go away 100%. My trigeminal nerve is obviously being irritated so in that sense I guess they are the same or at least similar. I also clench & grind my teeth so dentist says that will add to it. Maybe I technically have TN not TMJ 🤷‍♀️ Doesn’t really matter though, does it?

It would matter for me. My insurance does not cover any treatment of TMJ which I was diagnosed with many years ago. I clench and grind so much at night that I have broken several teeth. I have to buy a mouth guard every few years at $400.00 a pop. Right now I need 3 new crowns and am just waiting on the final dollar amount so I can figure out how to pay for it all.

My jaw muscles are tight all the time. I am on a muscle relaxer, but it only helps at night when I take it. I can’t work while under the influence of the MR. it’s all very frustrating. I think my issue is truly TMJ.

I’ve had “zaps” to my face, so maybe I have both. I don’t know.

Sorry to hear your insurance doesn’t cover it. Will the dentist work with you on payment?

Can you see a PT who does hands on work? Mine actually works on the jaw muscles fascia. It noticeably loosens them-still get the pain but at least jaw works better!

I actually have a dentist appt tomorrow for a cracked tooth (he said that’s where we are starting 😳) Dentist continually recommends a mouth guard but I can’t deal w it. I can be quite tactile at times 😂

The mouth guard is uncomfortable the first night or two but after that it is no problem.

I had so much dental work as a kid that the mouth guard doesn’t faze me. PLUS I have sleep apnea. I have to sleep with the guard and a CPAP 🤦🏻‍♀️

I also have to wear a guard and a cpap mask. Fun..NOT!

Years ago before I was diagnosed, the right side of my face and chin went numb. I went to the ER. Was not a stroke. Now every time I get a flare up or get very stressed it happens. No one ever said it's TN. I don't know if it's the same. It's a very uncomfortable feeling. Do others feel this?

Yes, ask your doc about Trigeminal Neuralgia TMJ

I've read that TMJ can be responsible for Tinnitus (ringing in the ears). FYI.

No can not say I ever experienced that, but you never know
