Well that was different

I have quite a bit of experience getting an MRI at a hospital. In virtually 4 different countries as a matter of fact (one was right on the border of Germany and Switzerland so I like to think it was multinational 😂). But I’ve had no experience quite like this morning! Getting in was an ordeal and they refused to let my wife enter as my caregiver and I had no idea how I was going to fill out the forms since I can barely write. Or what would happen to my mobility scooter since you can’t take it into the room with you. They also initially refused a young man from going in who was pushing his mother in a wheelchair. She was blind AND had a broken leg! Luckily someone finally gave my wife the ok to help me and everything worked out in the end but it was quite stressful to say the least.

Hopefully it will go well 😊 I had my infusion at a different hospital in town last month and it was nothing like this.

Sounds like quite the experience for you both. It’s bad enough going for a mri but add on the extra stress. Hopefully the results will be good. Blessings Jimeka 😊

I’m sorry it wasn’t easy, but I’m glad common sense prevailed and you were able to get the help you needed.

Where r you located? The virus #s high?

Southern New Mexico. It’s actually pretty low compared to the rest of the country. But apparently they’ve testing and for Covid-19 at the hospital and are using extreme caution. Regardless, not allowing caregivers seems a bit over the top.

Yeah, our COVID nmbers are low (I'm in north central NM) but our hospitals are getting maxed out again . . . . because our governor is accepting COVID patients from AZ and TX, so we residents are supposed to no longer be misbehaving children or she will paddle us again. Of course UNMH is still not scheduling appointments so I don't know when or if I'll get to see my neurologist again.

I have an appointment at UNM on the 30th but I am expecting it to be a video appointment again.

CrazyCatWom profile image
CrazyCatWom in reply toCorran731

I can't even get another video appointment.

Corran731 profile image
Corran731 in reply toCrazyCatWom

That’s terrible. I’ve had mine since February so hopefully they won’t cancel on me.

Ahhh! They probably won't cancel on you. They are doing good with appointments scheduled before the Apacholyps. That was why I was able to have a video visit last month. It had been scheduled in December 2019. The problem I'm having now is scheduling the follow up appointment that is supposed to be in December 2020. They won't let me do it, and my neurologist wasn't even aware that's what UNMH is doing.

This is ridiculous! I had an MRI 10 days ago. The only difference from before was that it was really fast. My husband was allowed in, as before. He rolled me in using my travel wheelchair. Then they switched me to their wheelchair to go into the MRI room. I was in and out in less than an hour. Whatever state you are in, I don't want to find myself there.

Yes, the one good thing is I was the only person in the radiology waiting room. Last time it was so crowded my wife and I had to wait in the hallway.

My next MRI is in November hopefully things will have calmed down by then. I am close to you in the number of countries to do an MRI though. I've got 3 under my belt now. Italy, Germany, and the United States.

I haven’t had an MRI in Italy yet. Maybe I should add that to my bucket list ;-) However my Italian is quite bad and pretty much limited to the lyrics of Caro Mio Ben. Not very useful in a healthcare situation 😂

Peruzzot profile image
Peruzzot in reply toCorran731

That's ok. My German is good enough not to starve to death. Not much use for medical situations. Luckily most Germans also speak English especially around the US military installations.

All though the doctors and nurses in one Italian hospital (it's closed down now) really scared me. They were all excited because they got an English speaking patient who could also speak Italian. They had this one medication that came with instructions only written in English. They asked me to translate it for them! Holy crap! These people are giving this to people and they're not completely sure what it is! It was just a saline solution and only administered topically, so nothing serious.

My wife and I visited there about 10 years ago when the vineyards were having their open house weekend. Her boss back then was stationed there years ago and showed us around. That area really beautiful.

well,i have one aug 6th and they already informed me my husband will have to drop me at the door,it is a big facility and he figured it out last week with my infusion.i have to say i truly detest our lives like this,it is not hard enough for us ,never considering people who need assistance.....ughhhhh

I had one this morning. In and out in about an hour. I was the only one there. /well a guy came after me. They are very careful about not spreading the virus. Everything sparkled. We like our medical people to keep everything sterile. I don't mind if it takes longer. Just don't want to get sick.

My hospital let's someone in if the patient needs physical or mental assistance so you would not have been hassled at all... or at least you shouldn't have. I think some of the screeners are over zealous in their work though.

Corran731 profile image
Corran731 in reply toahrogers

That may be the policy here (they already had Caregiver tags made) but the person doing the screening looked to be a security guard (at least she was in a security guard uniform) and apparently was given no authority to make those judgment calls. It would have been nice if she had said “hey, you need to go in and get authorization for her to enter.” But instead she simply said it wasn’t possible.

ahrogers profile image
ahrogers in reply toCorran731

That's a shame! We will communicate with the screeners when we know a patient needs assistance even if we think it should be obvious so people aren't hassled. If you have further appointments I would call the department you will be going to ahead of time and let them know the situation and maybe they can do the same.

I hope you get good news from your MRI 😁
