Getting better by trying something new

Hi all, I want to share my progress with this group. Lately I have been having some decline in my health. Trouble walking, trouble with my right hand, etc. Today I walked unassisted. No walker, no cane, no leaning on a person. First time in months. How did i do it? As my health declined, I became open (very open) to trying new things. Acupuncture twice/week, became a vegetarian plus signing up with "MSgym." My spastic muscles get loosened up by getting into those trigger points which is helping me walk and even lift up my arm. It's only been a few days and i am skeptical of everything but this is really helping me. You know those tight spots where the knots are that I'm talking about? it's called Myofascial release. Look it up. Well, i hope this post helps someone. wishing you all well.

Hi greaterexp Your good wishes are appreciated. i am hopeful but still cautious. What do you do to keep your spirits up?

For me, I've learned that I can't let myself get far down the road toward depression. I'm usually a very positive person, but struggle with the blues and anxiety at times, both of which are new for me. I used to work in psychiatric nursing and remembered the paradox of needing to do the very things we don't want to do when feeling depressed. I forced myself to get on the elliptical for even 2-3 minutes here and there, get outside, catch up with friends on the phone, and basically get off my rear end. I normally love sewing, but for that blue period, I didn't have any interest. I had to force myself to turn on the sewing machine, but soon found that the interest picked up once I got going. I also try to pay attention to my diet, staying away from sweets and high fat foods. Getting back to church and playing piano has been therapeutic.

I hope your spirits are good and that you are full of hope.

Aww thank you. I try and do something everyday that I know will be a challenge. I must admit that if any one says don’t do it, I say why not and try and do it. My Grammy always used to say, ‘ where there’s a will there’s a way’ . I like to keep busy, so I find a lot of meaningless tasks to do, but at least I accomplish something. Blessings Jimeka 🤗

I wish I was always positive...I strive for that 🤞

Self talk...tell myself must be strong, must be resilient. And I always think if I do ‘X‘ I can control my MS. Sometimes That could be pretty disappointing because as you know we really don’t have much control over it.

I really need to work on acceptance.

I exercise, paint, meditate, and when there’s no pandemic I try to do for others via volunteer work. Those things take me out of my head and my selfishness.

I hear your “self talk””

I think being open to trying new things is key. Congratulations on beating down that part of you that thinks they know everything! That’s what’s been so helpful for me too.

thanks for saying that. I always fight off self doubt and sometimes, rarely it leads to action. This is one of those times. Not sure why now but i'm not complaining. Today about 7:30am before it got too hot, i went for a long (3 blocks) walk (for me) without a cane. under the category of things I don't take for granted, this was big. the last block i wished i had the cane but it's ok. i'm getting stronger and this is the first time I can say that since before the lockdown.

I have been working toward going vegan. I always feel better that way. I seem to think clearer. I used to get weekly massages, which helped so much. Would love to find a way to do that again. Thanks for sharing, hope you continue forward on feeling better! Kelly

I am doing the same as you, and eating tons of fruits and raw veggies. I love beans, which is good. All of it helps. Overall, I just feel better that way. Thanks for a great post! Love, Kelly
